Today we’d like to introduce you to Nica Angeles.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a kid, I had always been artistic and creative. I have always loved to learn new crafts and try out new mediums. I came across a picture online of a wire wrapped crystal and thought it was absolutely stunning. After a few tutorials, I was able to start creating my own. I started off making them just for myself, and eventually my friends and family would ask me to create pieces for them or as gifts for others. After several conversations with my boyfriend, my family, and my friends, I was led to make the courageous decision to start selling my jewelry and paintings. Over the course of my life, the mediums I have learned in addition to wire wrapping and painting are embroidery, crochet, metal stamping, tattoo design, resin art, beadwork, and fluid art. I started my selling journey in May of 2018, and have vended at several local events since then.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am currently a full-time college student, so keeping up with inventory can sometimes be a challenge. The market for art can be very hit or miss and it can be very difficult to make consistent sales, but the love I get in return from every customer is completely rewarding. I admit it is a little challenging finding event at first, but through the networks, I have made, I have obtained a steady flow of events and bonds that will last a lifetime. I have had doubt, times where I had stopped my craft for weeks or months even because it was challenging and I lost motivation, but I have always found ways to get back up and create more things that I love.
SUNNICAELLA – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Although I practice many mediums, I specialize in wire wrapping and resin work. I preserve ashes and flowers in resin and create beautiful mementos that last a lifetime. Resin has connected me to people in ways that I never imagined art could take me, and I still remember the first time I was asked to preserve someone’s memory. I believe this sets me apart because even though this method was not of my creation, being able to take part in the lives of people in that way has been such a blessing and an honor. I enjoy connecting with my customers on a personal level and creating customs based on when I meet someone is always an exciting task.
Wire wrapping has been such an incredible journey. I have challenged myself in new ways, and I am always eager and excited to learn new techniques. I try to keep true to my style and always credit others if I take inspiration from them
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was seeing people wear my work regularly. It is always a pleasure to see people so satisfied with my work. I love bringing joy and positive energy to people, which is what I try to manifest into my pieces.
