Meet Sean Coyne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Coyne.

Sean, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started The Tenure Co in June 2017 out of a desire to create something that would take me out and above my comfort zone. I had been thinking about making candles and creating a company for over a year before that time. I bought my first kit in March of 2017 and by June I had launched with four scents. Since then I have expanded to 9 core scents and have released several seasonal lines. I chose candles because most people, including me, love candles. I love watching the reactions when people smell them for the first time. It is something so simple but can bring so much joy. In 2020 I hope to add a few more core scents to my company and maybe even expand beyond candles.

Has it been a smooth road?
Tenure has been a pretty smooth road so far. There are times where money prevents me from doing as much as I would like, but I am proud and feel very accomplished for what I have done so far. I took my first year very slowly while I defined the company and got a feel for it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Tenure Co. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Currently, The Tenure Co specializes in scented candles. What sets Tenure apart is the pricing and scents. When I started I decided I would be the most affordable candle company in San Diego. After seeing the costs of the raw materials to make candles I couldn’t believe what the other companies were charging. I sell 3oz candles for $5 and 6oz candles for $10. I do not plan on raising those costs ever.

I also tried to create some scents that you don’t see every day. A few examples would be Barbershop, Coconut Cold Brew, and Beach Blanket. There are still common ones like Peach + Pomegranate, Rosemary + Lavender, or White Tea + Mint. I’m constantly sourcing new oils and trying new combinations to grow my line.

People also recognize Tenure from the simple goose logo. I give free stickers and pins to anyone that buys or even just stops by my booth to talk. The thing that I am most proud of is that I’ve managed to do all of this alone still. From marketing, finance, inventory, and everything in between, I have been able to stay on top of everything while growing year after year.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I LOVE San Diego. I love the arts culture here that is supported by so many local markets and shops. There is massive support for local businesses here. I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and moved out here over 5 years ago. I constantly think that I would not have as many opportunities for this company if I still lived there. I have no complaints about this amazing city.

Pricing:

  • 3oz Candles – $5
  • 6oz Candles – $10
  • Odds + Ends (Candles from seasons past or trial runs) – $2-4
