Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Painter.
Erin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been an Esthetician for 12 years. I absolutely love what I do. Last year, the business I had been working at for nearly four years abruptly shut down…. 5 days before Christmas. It was a difficult blow and I had to scramble to figure out where to go next. I loved that job, but I knew that if it was where I was supposed to be, it wouldn’t have shut down. So after a year of trying to figure out where my next home would be, I decided to finally go out on my own and open my own business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course it hasn’t been a smooth road. The industry is full of slow times and you have to work hard to maintain a steady following. As a young esthetician, it’s difficult to find someone willing to hire you without experience…. thus not being able to gain the experience needed! It’s extremely frustrating. Find a place in the industry you’re passionate about where you know you’re able to excel and focus on that. This can come from natural ability, education, practice or a combination of these things.
I knew I was a good waxer. I’d been doing it with these little strips from the drug store that you heat up in your hand since I was a teenager…. so that’s where I started. I met a gal in esthetics school who also had some “experience” and we helped each other get better. We wanted to learn. Eventually, I got really good at it just by doing it all the time…. (a big thanks to my friends that let me practice on them in the beginning… you rock!)

I am an Esthetician who excels in full-body speed waxing. I can give you a great facial and get your skin looking fabulous, but if you want a perfect Brazilian in 10minutes, I’m your gal! I really try to connect with my clients and educate them on their services. That way, they know I’m invested in them as a client and they understand why it’s important to keep up with monthly maintenance and daily home care. I went through many different types of waxes until I found the perfect one….. I promise, if you’re scared of waxing, come see me.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Esthetics is a female-dominated industry. People come to a spa to relax and feel pampered. By nature, women can be really good at helping people feel that way. Some of the best bosses I’ve had have been women. People that see your potential, recognize your passion and indulge your craziness when you want to make sure you’re using the best stuff out there.
