Meet Brittney Hewitt of Nordstrom in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Hewitt.

Brittney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was growing up I did acting from the age of 9 to 20. I loved being on set and feeling apart of something bigger, and I always remember wondering, “how did those wardrobe ladies get that job?”

As a senior in high school, I was getting headshots done by my photographer, and she asked me if I’d also ever be interested in styling some of the editorial shoots she does. I have always been into fashion since I was a young girl, so I, of course, said yes!

From then on out, styling became way more of a passion of mine. I still love acting, but I’d rather act in my household and just be a goober with my husband than on stage. I much prefer behind the scenes doing what I am so passionate about.

While I was getting my bachelor’s degree in fashion in college, I did an internship at a showroom where I ended up getting connected to the job I still have. I style and assistant style for hautelook and Nordstrom rack eCommerce, and I produce for Nordstrom videos online. I freelance style as well, and my dream is to be a stylist for upcoming country music stars in Nashville, helping them find their image.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not! It’s true what people say, connections are EVERYTHING. I had to work for free for many years and do favors for a lot of people to get the connects I have today. I now have so much experience in the field I am in, however, there is always growing to do and goals to accomplish.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I started freelancing as a senior in high school, but it snowballed once I hit college. I did a lot of test shoots to create a portfolio and resume. I now style music videos, editorials, tv shows, and much more and am so grateful for the projects I have been apart of! I now mainly produce for Nordstrom online, but styling is still my passion and I have not given up on that! My styling differs from others because I love pairing loud pieces with everyday pieces. People have always told me they love my style, but I don’t think THEY could pull it off. I believe “pulling something off” is an attitude and based on IF YOU like something, not if someone else does. Buy what you like, not what you think fits into a certain mold.

Instagram has been a great platform for people reaching out to me about styling and has gotten me a lot of jobs that I am so proud I’ve been apart of. I post most of my projects I’ve worked on, on my Instagram and you could see my styling has its voice and a unique twist that catches the eye.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I grew up in Orange County, but I would not have gotten to where I am today if I did not move to LA for as long as I did. Most of my connections happened there, and I am lucky enough to have been able to recently move back to the OC and now have connections there, here, and San Diego. SD is not a bad place to start, but I recommend at least putting your feelers out in a more specialized city. The one piece of advice I ALWAYS tell people is to get an internship while in school! That is how I and many others get started and meet people in the industry. Even if the internship isn’t exactly what you want to do, do something close enough to where you’ll meet the right circle!
