Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Roberts.
Kayla, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working at the department store as an on call for the beauty department & that’s where my passion for makeup artistry grew. I was invited to further my training with the company, and I grew exponentially from learning the latest trend to application and I loved it! I started moving up within the company and was soon working for different cosmetic brands like Anastasia Beverly Hills, Urban Decay, Too Faced and so many other incredible brands.
It was then that I started promoting my services on Instagram, I began doing make-up for my friends and now I work doing weddings and quinceaneras, to date nights and formals. Every time I saw my clients get excited about the looks and saw their confidence rise, I gained more of a passion for it.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth. Learning to work with different eye shapes and ethnicities was a struggle for me because for years I had only been practicing applying make-up on myself. Learning the different techniques for the application was a challenge as well and becoming comfortable enough to be in someone’s face to create that look.
Promoting myself was another big struggle because nobody wanted to give me a chance, they wanted to go with someone they knew could get the look done or they only wanted me to do their makeup-up for free. Took a lot of time to get good enough to make somewhat of living out of it.

Currently, my business is very small just like a lot of other businesses starting but I take the services I provide & clients very seriously. I provide a wide range of beauty services like make-up application, facials, & waxing. I’m known primarily for make-up application skills, & I recently graduated esthetician school so I’m currently practicing facials & skin care. Although I respect all makeup artist I think that knowing about different skin types gives me an advantage in creating the best customer experience.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love San Diego! I love the clients in San Diego, I love the weather & the atmosphere. One thing I love most about San Diego is that the beaches are close but so are the mountains. A little drive either way and you can get away.
