Maru, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, my name is Maru and I’m Brand Marketing and Event Wizard from Ukraine. I was Harper’s Bazaar brand manager back in my country and was responsible for the whole Brand Marketing Strategy development and implementation for the whole country. I have worked with all celebrities, designers, and luxury brands in the past. Then we have moved to the USA with my family three years ago and I have to start everything from zero again. With no friends, networking, in the new country. I have a long, hard but interesting journey.
All these job interviews where I heard ”you are great but overqualified for us…” ”oh, you are so young and have 13 years of experience, sorry but you are overqualified”… Hate this word 🙂 I cried so many times the first year and really almost lose my self-confidence and power. But thanks to my Family and the Universe I found my way.
As for now, I’m Marketing Director for the biggest fashion platform in The USA – Art Hearts Fashion (Los Angeles Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and Miami Swim Week). It is fun and amazing but I really want to be more in San Diego and to feel that I belong to this City. Together with my friend and partner, ANNA Kara, we created our own business- NEW PMU Academy. We want to be near and to help everyone who needs to start a new career, as we’ve been there, and we know how painful and scary it is.
Back in Ukraine, I was well known as one of the best Event producers in the country, and I want to bring my talents and keep doing amazing, soul made events here in San Diego. So my plan for 2020 is also to open my Marketing and events agency for the local market, right after my baby girl will be born 🙂 I’m a crazy and unstoppable woman 💃 but I have so much energy, I want to share, to serve people and to be useful on this planet. I’ve worked with the best and world-famous brands in the world, such as YSL, Dior, Lancome, Chanel, L’oreal, Audi, Porsche, Jo Malone, Hewlett Packard, and many others. I have so much to give to the local market and I will do it with all my heart.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was very hard way. Imagine that you are an IT girl, who has a dream job, a lot of friends, amazing events and parties, everyone knows and loves you and in one day you are in a different country and have to start again… You don’t have a community, your English is not perfect and every interview ends with “You are overqualified for us, we don’t think that you fit here”… what can you do with this? If you know that you are bad in something you understand that you need to improve this, to study, to practice, to do something… but what can you do if you just heard that you don’t belong here… it was really hard time, but it makes me strong and grateful for my husband and my family.
New PMU – what should we know?
New PMU Was created by Anna Kara and me to help women entrepreneurs start and develop their own careers in the beauty industry easy and with maximum support. Anna is a great permanent makeup artist and we combine my marketing experience with her knowledge of the industry and create a really great, heart-driven business.
To start working in the beauty industry, you have to have a license and to spend six months and to invest a lot, really a lot of money in your education. You will receive a certificate after completion of the course and a successful exam. We will give you not only the permanent makeup knowledge but also brand marketing and business planning training. So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our Dream is to create a franchise for NEW PMU and to help new entrepreneurs in all the USA. Maybe we are dreamers, but I know that nothing is impossible when it comes from the heart and it helps for other people.
