Meet Jayton Harps of Zero To Necessary in College Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayton Harps.

Jayton, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Get good grades, go to college, and get a good job. This was the criteria I believed in growing up as a young adult. Towards the end of my collegiate years at San Diego State University, I met a professional who talked about entrepreneurship. I didn’t have a clue what entrepreneurship was, but the idea stuck inside my head. In 2018, my mom wanted to start a business but didn’t know what. One day, she thought of a slogan saying Zero To Necessary! She called me and wanted to see if I was interested to do a business around the slogan. I said absolutely and Zero To Necessary was born.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! Some of the struggles consisted of submitting the trademark. Also, finding vendors to create the apparel, graphic artists, fundraising, spreading the word, the list goes on. However, my mom and I have been able to maneuver the best way we can thus far.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Zero To Necessary – what should we know?
Our mission is to encourage, inspire, and empower children and adults to reach their personal goals and fulfill their dreams. We do this by exposing kids in underrepresented communities to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). We’re known to transform a person’s mindset from a can’t do to a CAN DO attitude by providing mentorship, coaching, and opportunities in the world of STEM. We’re proud of our four Principles called REST (Relentless, Elite, Self-Determination, Tenacity) in order to toughen someone’s mind to pursue their goals in life.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Emotional Intelligence. This is essential because once you can control your own emotions, you have the ability to manage and empathize others. I had a hard time with this growing up, but once I began to master and expand my emotional intelligence, my success took off.
