Conversations with the Inspiring Marisol Morales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisol Morales.

Marisol, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It has always caught my attention how good an outfit can make a person feel and the power it has over how others perceive you. I studied marketing and although I really like that part of my career development, slowly but surely, I have been investing time and effort in being able to participate in an industry that has always been in the back of my mind. Fashion.

My friends and family have always told me that I have a sixth sense for styling an outfit and that I should do something with it. After acknowledging my passion, I decided to start my Instagram @stylingthebasics, which has been growing gradually and opening doors for me in an industry that I really love.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy road, but anything worthwhile has its challenges. Fashion is an industry that‘s in high demand, criticized and very competitive. I think my two biggest struggles have been, first of all, not seeing the growth that I would like to have, in this platform patience and hard work is key. Secondly, I have to dedicate a lot of my extra time on creating content and educating myself online because the Fashion Industry where I live is underdeveloped, meaning fewer opportunities that force me to maintain a full-time job in Marketing.

My advice will be to make sure you are passionate about what you do. It’s very important because when you have to spend a lot of extra time on it, you have to enjoy it and be happy about it. In the end, that will be reflected in the work you do and people will react to it. Also, to find something that sets you apart, something extra you can offer your community that adds value to what you do. With this, I think you will find a way to stay motivated and achieve what you set out to do.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I like to think of my content as a source of inspiration for people who are passionate about clothes. I have two certifications one in Fashion Merchandising and one in Styling, so I specialize in styling outfits with basic items that everyone could have in their wardrobes and showing them that repeating clothes is not a bad thing, it’s about finding opportunities to express something new with the same pieces. It’s also my way to inspire to go thrift shopping and to re-shop their wardrobes, we sometimes forget we have certain pieces that we can way in a new form.

I focus fully on the composition of the outfit and in the powerful message it will convey in the end. That’s what sets me apart and that’s why I don’t show my face in any of my pictures. I want the viewer to feel that they could be wearing the outfit, I want them to relate with my style and to feel empowered in their own clothes.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My sister: She has always motivated me to become a better person, to work hard and put in the extra hours to find happiness in everything I do. She’s my role model and I’m thankful I have her in my life every day.

WeWoreWhat: Danielle Bernstein is a constant source of inspiration, not only for her amazing style and the way she transmits her personality through her outfits but because she pushes herself every day to enter new ventures and branch out her brand. Since I started following her, she has grown exponentially but always managed to stay grounded and be true to herself and her community.

Maria Grazia: Dior’s current designer and the first woman to lead the brand. For me, she’s not only a fashion icon but a great example of female empowerment. Collection after collection you can see her passion in the pieces she creates, going beyond of what looks good or works on a model, inspiring and moving so many people in the process. She has redefined certain aspects of fashion and I will always look up to her and her work.
