Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Temple.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Chuck. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Justin and I met at UC Davis MBA program’s entrepreneurship class. Justin was a PhD candidate in biomedical engineering and I was in the MBA program. He was taking MBA classes while getting his PhD. We formed a class group for his invention for a natural form of female birth control. We ended up taking that project to the school’s business competition, UC David Big Bang! In 2016 and ended up winning first place and the people choice award. We put that money in the bank and left it there while Justin went on to post-doc work at Stanford and I became the COO of a juice company based in SF.
In 2019 we both decided we wanted to do something more important and were passionate about personal electric scooters. They helped me get around SF and with urbanization going up along with world population – we thought personal micromobility is the way of the future. I had also started the subreddit r/electricscooters in 2016, forgot about it, and then in 2018 re-discovered it had hundreds of subscribers all chatting about the latest innovations. I started building that community and asked them what they needed. They wanted a comparison chart of all electric scooters so they could understand what to purchase. Justin and I built that chart, which became the website electric-scooter.guide.
We reached out to the industry to also get electric scooters for review and started adding those to our website. This allowed our site to become the go-to source of information for enthusiasts worldwide.
Later on, we also started making YouTube videos. They were pretty bad at the beginning, but one of them caught fire and we started making more. Fast forward six months and now we have two other team members helping with our YouTube channel. Each week we typically release one scooter review and produce a live show.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not smooth at all. Neither Justin or I have experience with social media or YouTube. Justin taught himself to create our website, we leaned on our community for feedback, and I taught myself about YouTube and how to gain a following.
Electric Scooter Guide – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are known for having the most comprehensive electric scooter reviews in the industry. We are also known for the best resources (performance data, comparison tool, coupons) in the industry and are emerging as the leaders in our growing niche. Although others have reviews, no one actually tests electric scooters using car racing level GPS data to find acceleration, braking, and range data. We also produce a weekly live show with all the experts in the industry.
