Today we’d like to introduce you to Josie Adams.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Josie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m Josie – surface designer, illustrator, and fiber artist living in the Chicago area.
Hey Miss Designs was founded on the belief that creativity is important to a person’s mental health and overall well-being. I began my career as a fashion design teacher at a high school and went on to obtain a degree in counseling. While working with teens, I turned back into my creativity as a way to make space to hear the experiences of others without internalizing those experiences myself.
The belief that creativity can provide you with a deep sense of joy and worth is what I hope to share with everyone who comes in contact with my work. My highest goal with HMD is to inspire others to flex their own creative expression and make their mark in this world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a fun road – one filled with challenges and exploration. I did not major in art or business, so there has been a lot of learning for me. When I received my first licensing contract for fabric with Hawthorne Supply Co., I was absolutely thrilled.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
I am a surface designer and illustrator. I have fabric collections with Hawthorne Supply Co. out of New York and have done illustration work with several different companies and individuals. My work is heavily inspired by nature and travel, and my goal is to have my art on more products that inspire people’s creativity. I used to teach high school fashion design, so I tend to think in terms of fabric when I am coming up with my designs. I want to branch out into interiors and other avenues that people have the opportunity to express themselves creatively.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I strive for a sense of contentment and joy. Working as a school counselor, I came into contact with many heartbreaking stories – feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness. Joy is a word that is thrown around a lot lately. To me, joy and happiness are different. Happiness comes and goes. Joy is deeper. Joy is that underlying sense of purpose and optimism that keeps you going even on the bad days. I find joy in my faith and my creativity. That is how I measure success. The rest, my goals and aspirations for my business, just adds to the mix.
