Conversations with the Inspiring Sarajevo Petty and Sergio Bailey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarajevo Petty and Sergio Bailey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in San Diego, CA. I’ve always had a passion for food and art. I attended SDSCPA and then the Art Institute for Culinary Arts. I started working for Hyatt hotels in 2004 and had a great career with them for 13 years in starting from the bottom as a prep cook all the way to Banquet Chef in D.C. I left Hyatt and was blessed with an opportunity to start a pop up in 2018 called Surf &Soul Spot at a local church banquet hall. Soon after, I had to leave however, I’m grateful to God I had a great following.

I’ve known Sergio Bailey (who is a local and national football star) since he was young. We are related through his Godmother (my Godsister), who is now deceased. Through our love for her, he reached out and wanted to partner with me to bring back Surf&Soul and that’s where we are now. Extremely grateful for his support!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say surround yourself with people that will speak LIFE into your dream! Crawl before you walk so you can have strength to RUN!! I’m a believer (in God), so put my faith in Him and pressed on!

what should we know about Surf & Soul Spot? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are known for our Seafood Soulfood takeout, which mixes regional favorites with southern cuisine. Also for or custom lemonades.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I believe that a lot of times men or people, in general, take you less seriously as a BUSINESSWOMAN and not just a woman. Don’t call me sweetie, honey, or anything like that address me respectfully no charm needed.
