Today we’d like to introduce you to Ross Goldman.
Ross, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My parents both always worked in theater and involved me in the behind-the-scenes work from a young age. I quickly became interested in sound engineering for live events and was lucky to have several great mentors who showed me the ropes. I studied Theater Sound Design at UCLA and got to work on some high-profile events, TV shows, and movies, while I was a student. I was hooked! After college, I pursued theater sound design in San Diego, sound designing musicals at Cygnet Theatre in Old Town, and later designing for San Diego Opera.
Meanwhile, I also began working in the “corporate theater” field, designing and engineering sound systems for corporate events like conferences, product launches, and awards shows. I’ve been able to travel extensively for this career, working on five continents. I also get to work alongside some amazingly talented people. Highlights include mixing sound for Stevie Wonder, Garth Brooks, and Yo-Yo Ma. Ten years ago, I became a partner/owner of Event Wave Productions, and now get to work with a fantastic team of like-minded audio engineers. Our office and warehouse space is in Santee, CA, but we work all over San Diego and beyond.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like so many other businesses, our challenge in 2020 has been COVID-19. Because typical events involve large gatherings of people, the industry is seeing massive changes. Some large events have been cancelled or postponed, but many are going online-only, which presents a new opportunity to provide creative and technical services. We are still in the early days of these changes, but I expect the new ways of presenting and performing virtually will change this business forever. We are excited to be on the forefront of these new techniques.
Please tell us about Event Wave Productions.
Event Wave Productions provides technical management and live audio services for meetings, special events, live entertainment, and more. From small to large shows, we pride ourselves on providing highly skilled and experienced audio engineers and state-of-the-art sound systems custom-tailored for each unique event.
We also provide studio and post-production services, including recording, mixing and mastering albums, as well as editing, mixing and sound designing TV shows, movies, and corporate videos. We love hearing from our clients that in the midst of even the most challenging projects, sound is the one thing they don’t have to worry about. We pride ourselves not only on the quality of our technology, but the expertise, leadership, and positive, collaborative attitudes of our staff.
One area we’re proud to have innovated in is realtime communications at medical conferences. We developed technologies that allow an audience of medical professionals at an offsite conference to communicate with doctors during medical procedures in real-time. The doctor can teach the steps of their procedure to the audience, and a panel of medical experts from around the world can provide real-time feedback back to the doctor, positively shaping the outcome of the procedure.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’ve always been laser-focused on my passion: live sound for events, whether for theater, concerts, or corporate events. With new restrictions on large gatherings, it’s now clear that diversification is more important than ever. If I could go back in time and focus more on other related fields, such as film and TV production, the new normal wouldn’t be as challenging. That being said, I’m confident that we will have gatherings again. It might not be for a while, but the unique experience of coming together for a communal event, like a live concert, is an important part of the human experience.
