Meet Jordan Miranda of Boho on a Budget in Ocean Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Miranda.

Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in sunny San Diego, Ocean Beach. I have loved interior decorating and styling since I was a little girl. For hours I would design my playhouse, utilizing cotton balls for pillows, napkins for bed quilts, and popsicle sticks as headboards. It was a bit of an obsession. After graduating college, I got married got the chance to decorate my playhouse again, but for real! My only issue was we didn’t have the finances to afford all the items I wanted (hello Anthropology and Pigment). With little money in the bank, I wanted to find a way to design my dream home without spending thousands of dollars. I was determined to find a way to make that possible! I started thrifting all over San Diego, finding deals online, and figuring out ways to make my space exactly how I wanted it without buying brand new items.

That is where Boho on a Budget was dreamed up. After furnishing my home all through secondhand finds and thrifted items, I knew I wanted to start helping others create their dream space without breaking the bank. My friends started to hire me for their homes, and I slowly started to make it something I could do for a living! I then began to redecorating clients Airbnb homes and making them more desirable for guests to stay. This resulted in more traffic for the Airbnb listings. Whether it’s your home, property, restaurant, or just a small bedroom, I find so much passion in finding deals and creating a space that you want to come home to.

Has it been a smooth road?
Honestly, I love a challenge. I have always loved pushing myself and truly going all-in with anything that I do! I have done a lot to get where I am today. Of course, the road wasn’t smooth but if you’re going to go down tough roads you’re just going to need to wear tough boots! Playing sports in college taught me a lot about what it looks like to have grit and to just go for the things. My business started as a meager side hustle to do something that was fun but has now evolved into an occupation in which I spend most of my time. I would say the biggest struggle or hindrance for my business is the time that it takes to find just the right pieces on the used item market. Creating spaces for clients is like a puzzle. You need to be able to cater to their personal desires while at the same time create something that won’t be out of style in a few years. Finding secondhand items that check all those boxes can be found in a few minutes or a few weeks, literally. All in all, it’s a fun game to play!

Please tell us about Boho on a Budget.
My company, Boho on a Budget, is an expression of my passion to create spaces that feel timeless, tranquil, and personal. I help people all across the spectrum, whether it be bringing some color to someone’s living room, transforming a cluttered corner into an eye-popping nook, or helping a bride fulfill all her bohemian wedding dreams. If I were to describe my design style, I would say it rests its foundation in mid-century modern pieces, with lots of bohemian flavors, and hints of Scandinavian style. What makes my business stand out from the rest is that most of the pieces that I source are from secondhand suppliers or completely thrifted! By using items that have a little bit more character to them gives me the opportunity to re-purpose an item that would otherwise find itself in a landfill. The other nice thing about secondhand items is that they can be found at an extreme discount. Many of the pieces that I find are in pristine condition and can be found at a quarter of the retail price, hence the budget part of “Boho on a Budget”.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel as if San Diego is the best place to start a business such as mine! San Diego has such deep roots in being culturally diverse. What comes with that diversity is a multitude of unique and interesting pieces that are an interior decorator’s dream. I mean, I have found and sold everything from Indonesian entertainment centers to Mexican knitted rugs. Additionally, San Diego not only has a flourishing real estate market but it is highly desirable vacation destination. This leads to a large demand for “Instagram worthy” vacations rentals. Because of such a large demand, I can come in and supply a market that is essentially untapped!
