Meet Joey Hawkins of Simply Gutters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Hawkins.

Joey, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working in the sheet metal industry at a very young age. It was one of the first jobs I had. I worked, primarily in the rain gutter department because I genuinely enjoyed helping others with making home improvements, I was not afraid of heights, and I realized I was very good at it. I am a perfectionist at everything I do, and installing rain gutters is like art to me. Whether it’s the style, size, or even the amount of colors being used to ensure I’m color matching your house, rain gutters are not only a necessity to a long-standing house and foundation, but they also make for a very nice accessory to your home.

After finding my passion for rain gutters, I quickly realized I’d probably be working with rain gutters for the rest of my life. I’ve worked for a few larger rain gutter companies in the past, and the most recent one I was working for decided to keep their focus on other states, and asked if I’d like to purchase their Southern California branch. I knew instantly that I wanted to because, it’s everything that I’ve worked for, but it took me a few days to convince myself, “can I really do this?”. I knew that the only way to find out was to say yes. I must say, although I have a lot of experience in installing rain gutters, there is so much more to running a rain gutter company, than installing rain gutters, and without the team that I have supporting me today, this wouldn’t be possible.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been pretty smooth… so far hahaha. Everything has been new to me in terms of running a business, so doing my research, learning, and studying has been very critical for me in order to complete the necessary milestones to run a business in California.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Simply Gutters – what should we know?
I run a rain gutter company called Simply Gutters, and our motto is “Gutters Made Simple”, and that’s exactly what we do. We make gutters simple to understand, purchase, and install, for any property. I am most proud of the communication we have with our customers. They can call any of us, email any of us, or even text us, and we respond immediately. One of the main things that set us apart from other companies is that we’re very honest and knowledgeable. Whether it’s a customer who knows exactly what they want, or it’s a customer who’d like more information on how to solve an issue on the home, we take the time to explain the best solutions tailored to their needs and wants.

Too often, I hear contractors taking advantage of homeowners, and I truly feel for them. Most of my customers have invested a lot into their homes and to hear that they’ve been taken advantage of breaks my heart. The work we provide is honest, reliable, and comes with a lifetime warranty because we understand that it doesn’t often rain in Southern California, and we like to give our customers the opportunity to test their rain gutters once there is rainfall and to reach out to us if they need anything. We also mail out handwritten thank you cards to each of our customers to express our appreciation for doing business with us.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Honesty, it’s very important to be honest with your customers so they can gain your trust in working on their home and giving them a reasonable price.
