Meet Agustina Reca of ViloFit in La Jolla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Agustina Reca.

Agustina, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
ViloFit arose from combining my interest for fitness and nutrition and my medical background. As a passionate runner and an amateur triathlete, I have always wanted to promote health through movement. The psychological and physical benefits of exercise are undeniable and I became passionate about its role in preventing and treating disease. ViloFit looks to bridge the gap between my medical training and my active lifestyle.

I began fusing these interests during medical school. At the same time, I was giving Anatomy classes at university, I was working as a Barre instructor at a studio. I then decided to start my own workout group and this is how ViloFit actually started! I gave Barre-like classes in a park to small groups and, through social media I began promoting a healthy lifestyle. ViloFit now serves as a platform to provide science-based evidence about key aspects of physical activity and nutrition and hopefully, I have become a source of inspiration and encouragement.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The love I have for what I do and the energy my clients transmit have definitely made everything much easier. Of course, this doesn’t mean there haven’t been some struggles along the way. Keeping people motivated throughout winter has been my greatest challenge throughout the years since our workouts were done at parks. But I always tried to go beyond each possible excuse: I transformed the living room of my house into a small studio so no matter what, we would find somewhere to move. Rain or shine, we would get the workout in.

This past year has also been full of changes and challenges. I moved from Argentina to do research at UCSD and this, along with the current pandemic, have been two important factors that made things change a bit. Still, new opportunities came by. That is how i started to give online Barre classes and it has been a great way to connect and train people from all over the world, including friends and family back home.

We’d love to hear more about the business.
People have always recognized me as an active person. They know that either I already got in an early sunrise workout or that I am managing to get a training session between lectures and work. I used my energy, enthusiasm and love for physical activity to start ViloFit. As an instructor, I first began giving classes that combined Barre and running. Now, I am offering full 1-hour live Barre classes online where I lead all the classes.

I look to put into practice the importance of self-care and maintaining a balance between different aspects of life. As a medical doctor (MD) it is my way to promote health outside the hospital setting and, I believe that this is what sets me apart.

I love seeing how people make positive changes and create healthy habits. Realizing that I can serve as a voice of inspiration and motivation for others is what gives me the greatest fulfillment.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mom was the first one to suggest me to get qualified to become a Barre instructor. So, I owe her most of it. She has always pushed me to begin my own start-up and to believe in myself. She has built my self-confidence by showing me that I can positively influence others. Thanks to her I was able to combine my passion for medicine and movement and pursuit this dream of mine throughout my whole medical career. My younger sister has been my greatest mentor, especially when I dived into the social-media world. Also, she is always there to keep me focused and gives me the best feedback.
