Meet Farrah Camu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Farrah Camu.

Farrah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and graduated college from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. I’ve always had a huge love for music behind my studies and learned guitar when I was about 12-years-old and began singing a little before that in my elementary school’s performing arts group. I was a really shy kid growing up, and my parents always pushed me to join talent shows and my church’s band. However, I was never brave enough to do so that’s when YouTube came in!

I posted quite a few videos from when I was younger but ended up deleting all of them and then began reposting consistently about two years ago. It wasn’t until then that I started to notice I was slowly gaining a following on the platform and grew more confident in sharing what I love doing. I eventually moved to San Diego to live with my brother, I’m continuing YouTube, street performed several times, and I’m doing some gigs in the area to experience as much of the music scene here as possible.

My main focus right now, however, is to grow my YouTube and share my own music with anyone who wants to listen. I’m excited to be putting out my first single and music video on December 4th and plan on continuing to release much more after that.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been the easiest! I originally moved to San Diego to work a regular day job using my degree, and it wasn’t until about a year into the job that I could not stop thinking about what could happen with music if I gave it my 100%. I ended up quitting, picking up random gigs, street performing for some extra cash, and posting more seriously on my YouTube channel.

I kept comparing how much stability my day job used to give me with my current situation with music at the time, but the support from loved ones was truly what helped keep me going. I ended up gaining about 85,000 more subscribers on YouTube after leaving my day job and was able to receive some actual stability from the platform. It’s also given me a little online community of people that enjoy my music, which I’m super thankful for.

We’d love to hear more about your music.
I’m an R&B/soul artist. I love singing and playing out, and I love writing my own music. I’m most proud of being able to share my own stuff and seeing it make other people happy. I love receiving comments and DM’s from random people that have recently come across my music or who have been following me for a while, telling me that a certain cover of mine resonated with them.

I think what sets me apart from others is that my love of this art genuinely drives me. I want to be happy with how I spend my life and would regret not filling it with things that give me my own sense of fulfillment.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love San Diego! I love the weather, the views, the beaches, and just how laid back it is. I don’t particularly love how many people — especially in downtown — don’t care about keeping the county clean because it’s just so beautiful here.
