Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorothy Haines
Hi Dorothy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started modeling at the tender age of 19 after losing weight as well as gaining confidence with my body as well as the field. There were a lot of obstacles in the way both mentally and physically. One of the challenges that came across mentally was the fact that I grew up in a Christian household as a Jehovah’s Witness, with that being said I automatically told myself that I wasn’t going to do anything that anyone would say be non-Christian. Then I realized that my modeling itself would just spark a conversation anyway, so I followed my dream. I remember the brothers of my congregation asking me about my modeling and telling me to stop because it wasn’t the way of Jehovah, so I left. I didn’t want to serve a religion that already gave me enough trauma to write three books.
There was a time where I didn’t apply to any modeling because I had worked a full time “real job”. When I realized my worth, I had quit my job and told myself that I was going to start my own business with either modeling or opening my own cannabis shop. Modeling is what jumped first, I had then teamed up with a good friend of mine Tyneil Allard who started her own clothing line Tyneil Jenes, I became her brand ambassador to help with her brand. While the hustle and bustle of modeling can be quite crazy, I use the outlet of salsa dancing to leave all of my anxieties on the dance floor, This has helped me a lot in my modeling. For example, I use salsa as a mini photoshoot or as coaching when I went to a shoot for business, my pictures come out with elegance. Modeling brings joy to my heart every time I go to a shoot, I bring life to many visions of the designers while walking with power.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up a Jehovah’s Witness, you have a lot of opinions coming your way. People always think they know what’s best for you. When I told the brothers and sisters in the congregation that I wanted to become a model I was told that I wouldn’t go to heaven or that all I would be doing is porn. A lot of people were trying to talk me out of it saying that I wouldn’t be pure anymore. I remember being called into a room and the brothers bringing up my modeling telling me that it was “unpure”. The crazy thing about this, the way the brothers were speaking to me about it, it felt like they were undressing me with their eyes. I remember that night, and I remember telling myself that I would never step foot into another Kingdom Hall ever again. Another challenge I faced was fear. Fear and Faith don’t mix. You cannot be fearful of any work that you do, but you need to have faith in yourself in order for your job to be successful. Let’s be real when going to a photoshoot, the higher-ups don’t want to hear “Oh, I can’t do this because of what I believe in.” They’re going to look at you and gladly tell you to be on your way. Instant replacement. If that happens to you, remember to stay on all ten toes. If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. Mentally a challenge I had to overcome is the image of my body. I’ve always struggled with my body esp. when it comes to comparison with other people. We have to remember as people, there’s always going to be someone who is prettier, more fit, etc…. We have to remember as people that, that shouldn’t stop us from thriving. You are your own being.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Tyneil and I have a podcast that just recently launched. You can listen to it here at Patreon.com/T_D_Podcast. We launch a new video every Friday at 8 am PST. Here we talk about business, manifestation, and keeping an excellent mindset on how to run your own business. This podcast was made for women, by women. We encourage everyone to listen to the podcast, even if you’re not a woman, you might hear something that’ll stick to you. If you want to be featured in our podcast email us at t.d.network.podcast@gmail.com. As I said earlier faith and fear don’t mix, so when I approached Ms.Tyneil with the podcast idea, she was quick to jump on ordering her microphone right then and there. I already had my for over a year due to fear being in my pocket. Sharing this experience makes me realize that fear will indeed hold you back and you will lose out on money. Don’t let fear hold you, once it has a hold on you, it’s hard to let it go. Live and live free.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I honestly want to work a UFC fight. I’ve always wanted to go to a fight while having a cool excuse to go. I love watching the highlights as well as the actual fights themselves. I remember going to fashion shows at U-31 and standing at the pool tables to watch the fights. I would right there with the guy. Boxing, in general, was my all-time favorite past time.
