Daily Inspiration: Meet Kamyle Lowndes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamyle Lowndes.

Hi Kamyle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In April of 2017, I purchased my first camera, a Canon Rebel EOS, from a pawn shop for $220.00. It was ten years old and the memory card still had photos from the previous owner. Before that day, I had never taken a photo on anything other than a basic point and shoot or a disposable camera. At that time, I was still living in Louisiana and my photography left a lot to be desired. I moved to San Diego in August of 2017 and that’s when I truly fell in love with photography. I traded in my Canon Rebel for a Canon T6i and started to explore San Diego and its picturesque landscapes. Eventually, I added another camera and a drone to my equipment and started to shoots weddings and family photos.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As much as I wished it was a smooth road, it has and still is currently bumpy. The first and most common struggle is financial. Camera equipment is more than just the lens and the body. It’s the lens, the body, the filters, the tripods, the editing software, the gas to get to locations, etc. Sometimes I deal with a lack of creativity, and the failure to quantify small progress as any progress. I often suffer from burnout and honestly, this is field is extremely saturation, so exposure, or lack thereof, is a huge obstacle.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer. I shoot majority landscapes. Nature is beautiful and I love when I am able to capture that beauty and that specific moment in time because there is a great chance that it’ll never look like that again. I also do portrait and wedding photography. Same concept, I love to capture moments, candid moments because that is when you truly capture your subjects’ personality and not just the facade. I am a bit different than other photographers in that sense. I see the functional need for poses, but I don’t see the organic need for them. I’d rather let the subject lead the shoot. I found this approach calms their nerves, and they are a bit more relaxed. This allows me to form a more personal business relationship with them.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I’ve learned how important human connection truly is. COVID has taken a toll on everyone, and without my family and friends, the toll has to power to be too heavy to bear.
