Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Larson.
Seth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Not sure how far back we want to go, but my father is who started me off in the industry that I’m in. He got licensed as a custom home builder way back in the 1980s in San Diego so I grew up helping him on the weekends and every summer.
I followed in his footsteps and hold the record as the youngest person in California history to pass the test and obtain a contractor’s license at the age of 19. That’s a tough record to break since you need to prove that you have four years of ‘journeymen level’ experience, which I had 5.2 at the time. Since then, I started a design/build remodeling company where we completely remodel about 15 homes per year for really great clients and took over a roofing company, Resilient Roofing, which was founded in 1967! My wife Marianna and I run both companies and are surrounded by an amazing team.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hahaha – no smooth roads around here! When you’re working with sticks and bricks and using human hands and emotions to put them together, along with widely varying customer expectations, things are bound to go awry. I pride myself and our companies in great outcomes at the end of the day!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’ll do a quick breakdown on each: Resilient Roofing was founded in 1967 and currently employs a staff of about 25 from the field and in the office. We specialize in residential roof replacements using a variety of materials such as asphalt shingles, clay & tile. We do things much differently than the other ~145 roofing companies in San Diego, including full communication (every day) during a project and we complete between 300 and 400 projects each year for happy clients.
Stel Builders was founded in 2006 and currently employs ten full-time staff, along with a multitude of trade partners every day. Our team includes a licensed Architect, two designers and an interior designer along with a full management staff to complete very detailed, high-end projects. Both companies focus on San Diego county only, and offer a myriad of employee benefits like healthcare, paid time off, VERY competitive pay, retirement savings matching, company paid outings (more before COVID, but we’re getting back to that now). Our office is actually located within 2 miles of THIRTEEN breweries which has been fun over the years.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Growth! I remember years ago talking about what the future looks like with a friend and he asked why we’re looking to grow. I said I love building things which probably started when I was a kid, and now it’s manifested itself into building businesses. I absolutely love seeing something start as an idea and building into something that helps people advance their careers and lives.
