Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Peranzo.
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My approach to fitness came as a result of a significant injury that left me unable to walk when I was 19 years old. I knew when I was rehabbing from that injury and learning how to walk again, that I needed to be healthy in a way that honored and respected my body. I needed to let go of unrealistic expectations, and learn to meet my body where it was at so I could find my strength again. I began training people at the end of 2012 with this very thought in mind. That strength and health are accessible and maintainable aspects of life, regardless of what the person thinks their body can do.
I realized that the majority of individuals need that tailored approach to working out. They need workouts that honor and respect their body and its capabilities as a way to push their limits, so they can get the transformations they want.
This journey continued after I had my daughter in 2014, expanding into helping the busy adult find health in a realistic as well as a sustainable manner for our busy days. I knew if I could drop the baby weight and regain my strength, at home, without having to work out multiple hours a day, I could teach the people around me how to do the same. I could show them how to work out within the parameters available to them.
I launched A Healthful Life with these goals in mind: to teach people how to create a sustainable healthy lifestyle from their living rooms.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every business goes through pivots and challenges. When I launched A Healthful Life, I was relatively new to the online space. Not only did I have to learn how to successfully market my health solution via social media, but I also had to get comfortable being on camera so I could share A Healthful Life with the community around me. In addition to navigating social media, during the pandemic, I also faced the learning curve of teaching classes online.
When the lockdown first happened, I quickly realized that people needed the aspect of a group class. People wanted to work out as a group, they wanted a place to leave their stress, and they wanted a way to stay healthy. My tribe gave me patience and offered me grace as I figured out how to configure my garage into a gym so I could teach live classes via zoom. We have changed class times, class days, dealt with internet failures, but have managed to overcome these obstacles so we can continue to have an amazing workout every time we are together.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A healthy lifestyle needs to be an individually curated solution. A Healthful Life gives people the opportunity, through private coaching, to create a lifestyle that works for them. Weekly private calls allow clients to make the changes they need based on how successful the previous week was, as well as a confidential space to share challenges they faced. It also allows them to work with an expert as a means of collaboration to create the solution that works the best for their lives.
While it is not a cookie-cutter solution, A Healthful Life takes what a person is already doing, what their life is like, and their goals and creates a solution that will work for them.
Every plan and solution is different depending on these factors, but the transformations are all similar. A Healthful Life gives its clients the confidence and skills necessary to sustain their healthy lifestyle regardless of challenges that might arise.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned along the way is to not take a client’s success personally. This lesson started for me when I left corporate America and started training people in a group setting full time. I want the best for all of my clients. I hear all of the things my clients want from their workouts and from being healthy, and I want to see them succeed. I want nothing more than to be the cheerleader jumping up and down for the changes they have worked so hard to create.
However, I have come to learn that while I might want these things more than anything for my clients, they have to want it for themselves. I will teach a person everything I know and be completely transparent with all of my knowledge. But I cannot teach a person to want the change and I know now that I cannot force that change as well.
Ultimately, it is up to my clients to take all of the information I give them and create the change for themselves. I will guide all of my clients, I will support them in every way I can, and I will celebrate every victory with them, but their success is theirs alone.
