Today we’d like to introduce you to Christin Martin-Gates.
Hi Christin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a San Diego native, and I’ve always had a passion for hair ever since I was a little girl. I didn’t go to a traditional cosmetology school; I got my license through the California Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program through the State of California. The apprenticeship program is a 2-year program which allowed me to work full time in a salon during the week and go to school for my theory 2 days out of the month. This was very beneficial for me because during that time I was able to build my clientele and learn my craft. I really took the time and educated myself on haircare and different techniques that I wanted to specialize in. After working in a salon for less than a year I decided to get my own salon studio. This was a big step for me because I was new to the industry and had never owned my own business. As it turns out this was the best decision I ever made.
When I first moved, I was a little skeptical because my salon studio was now located in the Point Loma area in an office building on a one-way street with no visibility or foot traffic. However, I loved my space and was determined to make this work. I decided that instead of focusing on just getting clients in the door I would focus on being the best at the services that I offered. By focusing on my craft and not just the number of clients it helped me to build a reputable and sustainable Hair Studio. I am now a sought-after hairstylist that educates women on how to care for their natural hair and how to always put haircare first.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Some of the challenges I faced when I first opened my business was my location. Being located in the Point Loma area in an office building on a one-way street with no visibility or foot traffic definitely comes with its own set of challenges. I would see many salons in my building close after only a few years in business. So early on I decided to focus on building a strong social media presence. I realized that that’s where everyone was connected to. Facebook and Instagram have played very integral parts in my career because now I had a place where clients could see my work and services that I offered and book an appointment all that the same time. This instantly doubled my clientele in less than a year.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in natural hair care and extensions. I like to educate my clients on how to properly care for their natural hair and how to retain moisture and length. I also like to give my clients options by offering healthy protective styles that will compliment their face, personality and style. I am most proud of the lasting relationships that I have built with my clients over the years. Many of my clients that have moved away still keep in touch and will catch a flight at any time to come sit in my chair. This is very gratifying and humbling to know that all my long days and nights and hard work has finally paid off.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband and family have been my biggest supporters. They have helped motivate me and push me forward in more ways than one. I love how they root for me no matter where they are. My husband loves to brag about me to his co-workers and friends and I truly adore him for that. My mom, sister and dad are always there to pray with me and encourage me even in the most difficult times. My family truly keeps me going.
