Meet Jason Gorgol of Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Gorgol.

Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was growing up a neighbor would weld. I loved seeing it at night the bright light. I have always loved building things since I was a kid. I bought my first welder when I was 18. Started making some money. I decided when I was 22 that I needed to know what I was doing. I went to a ROP program. I met my mentor. His famous words were “ break it do it again”. What ever I was doing in school. I found a night job to master what I was doing in school. I did the ROP program for 4 years. I treated it like my college. I went to work for TEK steel to learn more. I got laid off for a period of time. I decided it was time to start my business. I was doing my business part time before. TEK steel hired me back. I said things have changed since I started my business. They said that was ok. It worked for a while. I started to take days off for my business. Then weeks. TEK steel said I had to make a choice. I told them this is my two week notice. I never looked back. Been driving forward with my business. 20 years in business this year. I love the Dirty heads song “Vacation “. Even in the toughest days. I still love what I do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was hard after I quick my job. El Niño hit. I was out of work for 6 weeks. Luckily I had a fiancé that had a job and was able to pay the rent. I was trying to find any work to make money. I got going after that. There is always up and downs with business and life. I might get down at times. I find the way back up. The recession hit me in 2010. I had to travel for work. At that time a had 3 year old daughter and a 1 year old son. I worked on the road for 4.5 years. 300 plus days in a hotel. I missed my family. I did what I felt was best to support my family. I came home to a divorce. I was down for 6 months. Got myself back up and became a single dad of two of amazing kids.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love to create stuff from nothing. I tell my kids all the time I built that as we are driving. I helped install and weld the Escondido gateway sigh. I take on jobs no one wants. They can be very challenging at times. I figure out ways to get the job done. I like using my brains to problem solve.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I do the best I can with what I have. I provide quality work. One the reasons I’ve been in business as long as I have. I plan for another 20 years.
