Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Munter.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Balancing being a mom, a wife and being there for my clients is one of my biggest struggle. I pride myself on ensuring I am there for my clients every step of the way, which sometimes means getting on a call in the middle of the night or stepping out at eight PM to meet them.
The floral industry is tough. There are a lot of competitions out there and it has been, and will be a continued challenge to set myself apart from everyone else. In the beginning, it was tough to find the right vendors to partner with and learn how to sell myself as the right florist for the job. I am an easy going person and putting together a pitch was not my thing, so that was a huge struggle for me.
I also didn’t know the concept of saying no and there were jobs that I took that were not profitable. But I am learning to be more confident with my art and to be able to turn down jobs that are not the best fit for everyone.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a floral designer-a florist! I specialize in events and weddings and am currently venturing into commercial/retail floral design. I am known for creating affordable high end designs. I have a background in accounting so being on budget is a big thing for me.
I am most proud of the work I did for the Costume Guild Award in 2019. It was by far the biggest event I have ever taken on. Plus seeing my flowers next to Marisa Tomei, yup that was definitely a highlight for me.
What sets me apart from other florists is the hands-on interactions I have with my clients. I never take on too many jobs to make sure I am available for them. I offer comprehensive design consultations. Not just for the florals but also on other aspects like logistics. I don’t just design the flowers and be done with it. I am with my clients as they need me in the process.
How do you think about luck?
I work hard to get where I am and don’t see luck playing a part in my business. I am grateful to have the support of my husband, son and family.
