Today we’d like to introduce you to Mychele Roberts, CNMT.
Hi Mychele, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Connecticut. I came out to California in January 2018 in a last attempt at getting clean and sober. I have dealt with mental health illness all my life, struggled with self harm since I was in middle school and battled with addiction, in and out of detoxes and rehabs, for over a decade. It was here, in the Golden State, that I decided to make a choice, life or death. To live and not just to exist. I decided to go back to school for something that I had always wanted to do but could never stay clean long enough to achieve. I saw an ad for National Holistic Institute on my Facebook feed; called that day, and was in school for Massage Therapy next month. Going back to school kept my mind on something greater than myself and helped me stay clean during tough times I had faced. I went through the core program and then went on to the Advanced Neuromuscular program, completing 1250 hours all together. I chose this avenue of Massage Therapy because it deals with pain management. Being able to help people reduce and manage their pain without the use of pain medication is very rewarding. I’m proud of who I am today and where I came from. People ask me if I could go back and change the past would I, and I wouldn’t change a thing. All the pain and hardship I have endured have made me the strong independent and confident woman I am today and I am grateful to be able to give back to my community and create a safe space for those in need of help.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say the biggest obstacle I had to overcome was myself. Conquering my fear of the unknown and branching out into a world where anything is possible was the biggest challenge. The fact that stability wasn’t a guarantee kept me shackled to a corporate job. Being able to overcome that and work for myself to help people in a therapeutic way is the most rewarding experience. There are always ups and downs but taking the bad with the good is a part of life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the owner of Touch of Mana ,Therapeutic Massage. I am a mobile Neuromuscular Massage Therapist. Simply put, Neuromuscular Therapy is a more specifically focused version of deep tissue. It deals with pain management in a more holistic approach rather than simply taking a pill. Using techniques such as Myofascial Release,Trigger Point Therapy, and Cupping, it is a more medical and therapeutic type of massage. A relaxing Swedish technique is always used to finish the session. My prices are set for each session. 1 hour, 90 minutes and 2 hour. Each session is specifically designed to meet the needs of each client. Always remember: Self care is not self-indulgence, self care is self respect.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck. I believe in hard work and perseverance. Taking the leap from an employee to being my own boss was a huge step. Rewarding and stressful all at once. I am proud of my accomplishments and I own my successes as I own my failures.
