Meet Emily Lane of Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Lane.

Hi Emily, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I think my story is similar to many small artists. I had been wanting some unique art to decorate my house with and found some pieces online I was inspired by. I’ve always been a really crafty DIY person so I decided to try and create something similar myself. After I posted it to social media, I got a great response from friends and family wanting something for their own spaces and it kept growing from there!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest of roads. There are a lot of challenges trying to grow a small e-commerce business. I know the fastest way to get where I want to be is by growing my social media and gaining exposure, but there are highs and lows trying to gain momentum on social media. It’s hard not to feel stuck when your platforms aren’t growing like you hope they would. The algorithms are always changing and sometimes I don’t feel like I have time or energy to keep up with it all.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create one-of-a-kind wall tapestries using wool yarn and dye. While I produce a variety of designs, I would say I specialize in custom mountains and landscapes. For custom pieces, customers will often send me photos of a specific mountain range, whether from their home town, a favorite vacation, or a sentimental time in their life, and I bring that memory to life in a unique hangable art form. The first piece I ever created (which is still hanging up above my bed!) is a mountain piece. I’ve always felt a deep connection to nature and I love being able to create something people can hang in their homes and look at every day and be reminded of their own love for nature.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something people might not know about me is I also have a strong passion for animals. Aside from loving my own fur babies, I’ve spent many years volunteering at a local animal shelter photographing adoptable dogs for their online profiles. I’m definitely brainstorming ways I can incorporation this other passion into my business in order to make a bigger impact!
