Rising Stars: Meet Savanah Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savanah Rock.

Hi Savanah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve lived on the same street my entire life and I know even for native San Diegans, that’s pretty rare. Growing up in this neighborhood, I’ve seen all of its arcs, good and bad, since the early 90’s. Anyone around here at that time knows the 90’s was pretty rough for the inner-city communities. The golden ticket out of the cycle pushed so heavily on my cohorts and I was education. It’s important! But we knew it was even more important for the kids on our area. Living between 5 different schools, it seemed almost a waste to not have some sort of resource available right in the students pathway as they walk to or from school. The Little Free Library my father and I built was intended to be a beacon: inspire readers to gain knowledge or go on an adventure by providing a book for everyone.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have to say, we’re grateful it’s been a smooth road for the most part. Largest roadblock was getting materials for the library build. Because of the pandemic, lumber and other construction materials skyrocketed in price. Fortunately, my father is a retired carpenter and we found and recycled everything we needed with the exception of the library’s door handle and the barrel it’s posted in.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
This library is the first of its kind in terms of projects I’ve completed. It’s not something I do as a profession (web developer) but in chatting with the local schools as part of our outreach for book donations, it seems to be a big desire to have more of these within the community. The Little Free Library organization does donate library kits but it’s not often and the price of a kit is $320. Steep for a majority of folks.

This isn’t set in stone just yet but the idea has been tossed around about building more and donating them. It’s easier said than done on my end but it will be majorly up to my partner (again, good ol’ dad!) if we can commit. It’d be lovely if we could!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The Little Free Library community on Facebook and Instagram is incredible. They are so generous and supportive; even if you’re just thinking about putting up a library in your neighborhood, I would recommend taking a look at what they do. They are so selfless and compassionate to their communities. Very inspiring!

Apps: Notion – my entire life is logged in this app and it’s how I organize almost everything. I highly recommend it for any student or working professional.

Books: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

Youtube Channel: Rowena Tsai – Life and productivity (without burnout) channel.
