Community Highlights: Meet Erendira Tovar of Cafuné Superfoods

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erendira Tovar.

Hi Erendira, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My business began with a personal interest in natural remedies and the use of them to relieve common ailments such as headaches, menstrual cramps, colds, fever, etc.

This interest grew more after an existential crisis about my professional career and my stable job as a planner/buyer for a tech distributor in Tijuana México.

My intention was to first launch my herbal mixtures based on whole leaves such as lavender, thyme, rosemary, etc. but I noticed that powdered superfoods were more attractive on social media and that is how I found out about the benefits of turmeric and of course the most popular and colorful drink at the time: golden milk.

I fell in love, I loved it and it was a great aid for my digestive problems, inflammation and insomnia.

I tried the recipe multiple times and my friends and family loved it, so I decided to pack up a small batch to sell.
So, I wrote about my product on a Facebook page called Lady Multitask on November 15, 2017 thinking that they would not sell. I was very nervous but that post had 279 likes and 397 comments 🤯  and I didn’t have enough product to meet the demand.

Thanks to that post, to social media like Instagram and Facebook plus the preference of my clients, local markets and coffee bars have known about me and little by little I have been placing my superfoods bags in Tijuana, Rosarito, Tecate, Ensenada, Mexicali, Sonora, Veracruz and Playa del Carmen.

Cafuné is a Portuguese word that means “the act of caressing the hair of the loved one” and although in its meaning it speaks specifically of the hair, I like to think that a cup of my superfoods mix is like a caress for our loved body.

This year I celebrate 5 years with Cafuné Superfoods and 4 years since I quit my stable job.

Today I offer 3 mixes based on superfoods, without sweeteners, without caffeine and without dairy products. Suitable for diabetics and vegans.

I ship to all of Mexico from my online store: www.cafunesuperfoods.com

My goal this 2022 is to sell on Amazon, and I’m testing to launch another delicious and nutritious product hopefully very soon. 🥳

This is the line of products that I have right now:

  • Turmeric Latte (turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, pepper and cardamom powder)
  • Carob Latte as a substitute for chocolate (carob, cinnamon and clove powder)
  • Chai Latte (cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg and clove powder)

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Most of my struggles have to do with time management and learning and doing new things for the first time, for example, taxes, invoices, making my own online store, being present and creating content in social media for my clients and followers and also dealing with myself all the time, because I work alone

Having my own business has been very challenging in a lot of ways, I feel proud of myself, very grateful to my clients and still hopeful about all the learning that awaits in this journey.

We’ve been impressed with Cafuné Superfoods, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cafuné Superfoods specializes in making superfood blends that are tasty but also balanced, with no sugars, dairy products or caffeine.

I sell an alternative for those who prefer a more natural way to consume and benefit from superfoods blends whether it is in a cup of hot or cold latte or integrating these superfoods in our daily shakes, snacks or even breakfast meals like pancakes, overnight oats, etc.

Cafuné superfoods is not about miracle products. It’s about building healthy daily habits and also engages with the belief that these superfoods are just natural allies that help us achieve our goals.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love San Diego, I mean I´m from Tijuana and there is a huge difference between them.

I love that San Diego cares a lot about green areas and parks, I also love that it´s a better organized city overall.

The only thing that occurs to me to dislike right now could be the economic differences between our currencies.
