Meet Joe Bagtas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Bagtas.

Hi Joe, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey everyone! I’m Joe, a Filipino actor and filmmaker. My earliest film memory is shooting with my dad’s Mini-DV camera at family get-togethers where we would act out scenes from our favorite movies. Those were some fun years and great times! When I told my parents I wanted to become an actor and director, I was surprised that they were so supportive of it all.

I’m heavily inspired by films like Old Boy, Versus, and Casshern that featured strong Asian leads. Not only were these movies masterfully done, but they inspire others to take up the helm and become an advocate of diversity in the industry. I also saw acting influences in heavy-hitting actors like Choi Min Sik, Jet Li, and Heath Ledger.

I moved to California in 2013 and it’s been such a fun ride! California has some beautiful sights, the best food I’ve ever tasted, and amazing entertainment opportunities that weren’t possible for me on the East Coast.  Whether it be acting in productions like CBS’ “S.W.A.T.,” “Deep Cover,” “Quantum Flux,” and “Animal Kingdom,” (shout-outs to the amazing people at Crown North Talent Agency for getting my foot in the door!) getting the opportunity to edit with talented mega-stars like Nicki Minaj and Rob Schneider, or directing heartwarming films like “Tir Na Nog” and “Make It” – these are the memories that last you a lifetime! I also found the love of my life here in California. My gorgeous fiancée and my favorite actress, Elise Diaz.

I also have to say, acting in San Diego is so fun! It was an honor to act in the film “A Killer Dream” directed by San Diego’s own Jeremiah Jimeno. The next day, we got delicious Hawaiian food at Leilani’s Café in Pacific Beach (their coffee is out of this world!) and then we hopped next door to Fig Tree Café for some incredibly-yummy dessert.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As anyone involved in the art industry knows, it’s a struggle until you make it! I remember being so low on rent and my director friends like Zach Brinkerhoff (“Hollowpoint,” VFX Artist on “X-Men”) Victor Mambu (“Darker Tanned Asians Podcast,”) and Elise Diaz (“Hitwoman Selene”) would help me in some of my most difficult situations. Sometimes the people closest to you help you find the strength to get back on your feet. For that, I’m incredibly grateful.

A lack of opportunities can be tricky to deal with. Coming from the perspective of an Asian actor, let’s just say, we weren’t always in the limelight. Things are finally getting better now, but I recall times I’d search for “Asian male” actor and nothing would come up. But I do think it’s our time to shine now.

As my very knowledgeable and dedicated manager Jennifer with Kreativ Media Partners says, “The industry comes in waves.” You just have to be ready for when the wave comes your way. Jump in and go for it, full force. Don’t give up on your dreams and have fun all the way through the process!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One breakthrough moment was co-founding a production company called “PopSpark Productions” with my fiancée and her sister Alexandra Diaz. Our studio focuses on branded content so let us know if you need any videography for your company! We’ve recently shot for brands like Jahan Nostra, Modern Karma, Steppa Co, Erik Ryan Brand, and more.

In terms of what’s next, I recently wrapped a heartfelt drama film called “Get Her Back” that I co-directed with the multi-talented Elle Rodriguez. I had a blast with my wonderful cast & crew, so look out for that! I’m also excited about an original live-action anime screenplay I’m writing called “Ricky: Undead.” And I’ll be starring in a visceral martial arts film called “Grams” written by Mark Ridgill. The film deals with the dangers and risks we put ourselves through for the love of our family.
