Conversations with Poohnana Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Poohnana Brown.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started modeling and becoming an influencer for a small online boutique called Love Your Lonjas. Being in front of the camera was always one of my passions since I was a kid. You know, when you watched loads of Nickelodeon and Disney Channel? Your dreams become curiosity. Like can I do that? I want to do that!

I knew being a plus-size model was around because shopping in the mall at stores like Ashley Stewart and Torrid I will see women on the posters or in the magazines ads. It weren’t that many at the time when I was young, but there were a few. So I started modeled for Love your Lonjas I’ve gotten so much positive feedback from the pictures I figured let’s see if I can go a little further.

Now you will think in today’s era how much they express “body inclusiveness” you think the plus-size community would of welcomed me with open arms. That’s isn’t the case. I was told I was too big or too small. I was told to lose weight so you can be a size 12, or I wasn’t the light skin they wanted. Yeah, it was hurtful. Yeah, I cried. I even asked myself “do you really want to do this? Is it worth it?” And then I thought about my pain how it will affect the next girl. And I said nah f*ck that! Young girls need someone that relates to them. Real plus-size needs someone that relates to the body type. The average plus-size woman is not 5’9 with a small flat waist and with a big booty. No shade, we come is all diverse sizes.

So I invented in myself. I had one of my friends help me create some comp cards and just never stop going to castings. I even bought my own backdrops and lighting kit to shoot videos and pictures at home. I told myself just work and do your own thing create your own brand, and rest will follow. And that’s how I came up with my brand SheIsPlusSizeBeauty LLC. I continued to work with small independent brands, walking runways shows, and networking myself until it just blossomed.

I know I’m still getting my feet wet, but so far I’ve been published for fashion magazines. Three billboards, countless runway shows, and ambassadors for lovely brands such as Fashion to Figure and more. I love making videos and Tiktok for brand products and clothes because showcasing my bubbly commercial personality, I knew since a child was do something I always knew I could do. And the rest is just hard work, tears and having a circle of people who keeps you motivated.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it’s hard, very hard. But my work ethic and personality makes it smooth. So smooth it’s tough for people to say no although I’ve been told serval times.

When your plus size, they label you as plus size is only 5’9, flat stomachs, with a big butt. When they just isn’t the case.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in runway, commercial, and print. I’m very proud that I made three billboards for two independent brands and my influencer videos that I put on social media.

To see yourself in real print or up on a billboard is so unreal. I believe I cried when I got home. And the videos it makes me so proud that brands reach out because they love my content. It’s sort of a validation that yes, you’re supposed to be doing this in way. Even after some time of self-doubt.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes thank God, I was still able to still work and push forward with my career during the pandemic. I had tons of clothes and products that I haven’t shot in yet when the world just sh*t down. So I went on Walmart.com and bought a backdrop and light Ming kit so I can still successfully work from home. Covid taught me to get smart and intuitive.
