Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Lawrence.
Adam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It was early 2016, I was working for a financial company and the 9 to 5 grind. I was getting burnt out and tired of working for someone making all the money. I wanted to be my own boss and put my future into my own hands. So one afternoon a friend and I were just talking about new inventions we could come up with to put us on the map. We threw some ideas around and started to look into new electric SUP’s, but nothing came of it. That night looking more in-depth I came across “Jetsurf” motorized surfboards. I was blown away that no company on the west coast was offering “Jetsurf” boards for sale or rentals. I knew that San Diego would be an excellent market and a month later I put my two weeks in. After a month of constant calls to “Jetsurf’ headquarters located in the Czech Republic. I finally received rental rights from the company and started MotoSurfCo the next day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road? No, nothing about opening a new business is smooth. It’s a daily struggle to maintain your sanity starting a business. With that said, it’s a good struggle. No matter where you are in the stages of your business you have to believe in yourself and persevere. Lack of capital, customers, and energy were the main challenges I faced during my first year. I’m sure I’ll face the same issues and more for years to come, but learning from your mistakes is a great tool in business. Be prepared for failure and let failure prepare you for success.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
MotoSurfCo is a sales, rental, and servicing of “Jetsurf” motorized surf boards. Currently, we are a mobile company and soon looking for commercial storefront to make a bigger presence in San Diego. We are also gearing up for a lifestyle clothing line in late 2018 to encourage to follow your dreams and live life to the fullest.
I mostly proud my company because I have always been an advocate of high level of customer service. I try to accommodate my customers as much as I can while giving them an experience they can remember for a lifetime. This also ties into “what sets me apart from other?”. Since I’m the only company on the West Coast, I have to set the bar high and make sure no one can do what I’m doing. Whether it be the rental aspect or fixing a board that they just spent $12,000 on. It’s always about customer service.
What were you like growing up?
In my younger years growing up, I was a normal kid, but always have been an adventure seeker. Jumping of roofs, skateboarding down monster hill, or snow sledding of jumps. All ending in some sort of broken bone. I had my first job a paperboy when I was 14 and continued to have a job all through high school. I always like having my own money. It might not have been a lot, but it was mine. Being raised in Chicago I feel that you are instilled at an early age an excellent workers mentality. Learning that nothing is for free and hard work will always get you ahead in life. I still believe that today.
