Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Greetis.
Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a Registered Dietitian working in hospitals, rehab facilities, and nursing homes in New York. My husband and I moved out to San Diego in 2017 and I started working at a dialysis center as a renal dietitian. After the pandemic hit, I decided to be a stay-at-home mom to my 1.5-year-old. I started baking a lot and thought it might be fun to sell some goodies as a side job. I decided to start making lactation cookies, which are cookies for new moms that help encourage breastmilk production. I struggled with my own breastfeeding issues and had made them for myself after giving birth. I knew that I could make some that were healthier and just as delicious. After a lot of trial and error with different recipes in the kitchen, Mama’s Cookie Jar was born when I finally found my perfect recipe. My cookies are crunchy, chewy, not too sweet with a touch of salt. These cookies are meant to be a delicious, healthy treat for any new mom when she’s busy taking care of her little one. I’m grateful for every new mom that reaches out to me for a batch.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting out during the pandemic was good and bad. It was good that I was able to be home and had time to bake but it was challenging when I first started out and had no customers. I spent a lot of money on social media marketing only to gain very little followers which was very discouraging. Also, after I had my second baby, I took about 9 months off since I also had a toddler at home. It was hard coming back and gaining traction again after being “closed” for so many months.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make healthy lactation cookies for new moms to help boost breastmilk production and for a nourishing snack. They have half the butter and sugar as normal lactation cookies, mostly organic ingredients, and no preservatives. They are made to order and I offer gluten-free and vegan options as well. I strictly sell through my social media (Instagram & Facebook).
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Yes!
– How I Built This Podcast – Guy Raz interviews business owners from all over the world and they talk about how they started (usually small with no money) and how they persevere and grow into major brands/companies. Very inspiring/encouraging.
– Gary Vee Podcast really helped encourage me as he focuses on using social media as a way to sell and he always talks about the power of the internet which is free. He also encourages people that are a little older and want to pursue their dream. I started MCJ as a 32-year-old mom.
– Girl Boss is very encouraging for female entrepreneurs.
