Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina My.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When you’re passionate about something, don’t give up. I’ve been in the beauty industry for 7 years trying to figure out where I belong. I made horrible business and life decisions throughout the years. It took a lot of trial and error to get where I am today. When I started this journey, I was doing hair, make-up, waxing, and even tried nails. It was fun for a while but I knew it wasn’t something I’d do long-term. I found myself watching lash extension videos on YouTube and figured I should go for it. I learned the basics in cosmetology school but at the time, it didn’t catch my attention. Fast forward to 2017 after practicing lashing on my friends and family for free, I got hired at UniLash. After a year of being a receptionist/assistant and part-time lash artist, I was able to take everything I learned and apply it to my own business. If you ask anyone who knows me personally, they’d tell you I’m a workaholic. Some people may see that as a bad thing, but not me. I found it best for myself to work as often as I could because I had no other responsibilities. Don’t get me wrong, between the ages of 18-22 I was a mess. Working was not my priority. It was going out with friends and living paycheck to paycheck at my parents’ house. My credit score was low and I was in debt from Victoria’s Secret credit card lol. From 23 to now, I view life completely differently. My life motto is “work now, play later”. Here I am. A business owner, and homeowner, with a high credit score, debt free, and living my best life. I know everyone’s journey is different and great things take time. It’s not impossible to get to where you want to be. There’s always a way up. My goal is to help men and women who are interested in building a career in the lash industry and mentor them to be successful so they can live their best life. No one tells you this but there’s more than enough room for everyone to win.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worth having comes easy. I’ve experienced business partners and working with friends. From my personal experience, it’s easier to work alone. If that’s not an option, then make sure you really know who you’re partnering up with. Although things didn’t work out with my partnerships, we remain professional and always end any relationship on good terms.
As you know, we’re big fans of Bougie Beauty lash boutique. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Bougie Beauty is a salon that offers many services. From lash extensions, lash training, ombré brow tattoo, brow lamination, henna, facials, and waxing. All of our self-made bosses are licensed professionals and provide a relaxing but fun environment to pamper yourself.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would not be where I am today without my mentor, the woman who motivated me to go out and start my own journey as a business owner, Anna Show. Working for her gave me the motivation to live a life I would love. Of course, my family and friends play a huge part in my business as well. They would let me practice on them even though I had so much learning to do. They would referral me to their friends/family. They kept me motivated through the downs of the business. There have been countless times when I wanted to give up but didn’t. It was because of my friends and family who kept me going.
