Today we’d like to introduce you to Rubén Reyes.
Hi Rubén, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Rubén Reyes Aguiar; born in the city of Ensenada, Baja, California on March 20, 1989. Graduated in law, draftsman and painter by passion, my style has focused mainly on representing flora and fauna in pictorial works from Baja California region, having a special affinity and inclination for figurative art and details. With the paintings and drawings that I carry out, I intend to generate a greater collective consciousness; we are part of a whole, connected, that constantly interacts; we must not detach ourselves from the environment and its natural composition; that is why that feeling and passion arose to use art as a tool of expression, we can recognize, value, clarify our ideas and concepts and develop skills and attitudes necessary to coexist harmoniously; people, culture, and environment as a unique element. Highlight natural beauties and seek to be appreciated and recognized as an element and value that requires everyone to preserve them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I do have a law degree which is not related at all to art techniques, so has been challenging deal with both activities and open my path in the artistic world.
Last July, I did an art residency at New York Academy of Art, and since I do not have any professional artistic background or formation, I had a lot of uncertainty to be able to perform duties the course could require since it was going to be my first, let’s say “professional lessons experience” in art; at the end, everything went great.
Have the opportunity to share knowledge with people from around the world and receive lessons from amazing and talented teachers it is definitely a one lifetime opportunity.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Well, I do love to draft – paint animals and human figure. Normally I like to do a very figurative style or technique which focus in represent all details an image or object have; colors, proportions, shape, composition, etc.
Lately, I have been, let’s say, “doing a more abstract style” or how I name “like unfinished technique,” so then I have been mixing my mainly or principal style, which is figurative, and this “unfinished style.”
What I think that so far can people recognize from my work is that I do a lot a fauna from our region (California), which is very iconic and representative, and try to combine this with human figure.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Since I was a child, I draw. Like every child, I was attracted to drawings and cartoons, but curiously I wanted to know how they did it. In elementary school, I always had a notebook and drew superheroes or something about soccer; anything that caught my attention.
