Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Crocker.
Jack, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have an eclectic background as a licensed general contractor and owner of a construction and remodeling company. Most contractors work in the field and never get any time in the office to learn the business side of things, but I knew to be the type of business owner in the construction industry that I wanted to be, I would need to know both the office and the field. So, I started in the field and then moved into the office.
My father was a contractor and he started me out working on homes when I was a teenager. When I was in my twenties and into my thirties, I learned the field. I became a journeyman in all the major trades and then went into sales. From sales, I went into management, and eventually, I was the head of over 3,000 employees. When the recession came, I felt the timing was perfect and I opened Classic Home Improvements in 2011. I’m skipping over a lot here, but essentially, I exposed myself to working in a business-to-business environment as well as a business-to-consumer, where most of my interactions happen today almost 30 years after I began my career.
Our clients are all homeowners living in San Diego, Temecula, and Los Angeles. My companies provide home remodeling and home-building services to consumers who value a company with standard operating procedures, quality workmanship, and high-quality products.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a long and windy road. We opened our doors during the recession in 2011, people still weren’t spending much money. I had a small team the day we opened so I had to keep them busy so we went to work telemarketing, canvassing, going to home shows – anything we could to find and earn clients. When we opened the doors, we were only offering exterior home renovation services but I knew I wanted to eventually open up a custom home building company so as soon as we opened up, I was already preparing for the inevitable evolution of the company.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most known for finding dedicated, responsive, and hard-working team members. I am proud of myself for developing them further in their careers. I love building things, and that includes building careers for the people who have supported me over the years. There have been several employees and vendors who I have helped to build their own businesses and I am very proud of that.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Life is long. People always say life is short, but I heard once that it is the opposite, life is short. And as I think about that more, as I age, I tend to believe it is true. I try to remember that in my interactions with people, life is long and we may cross paths again so I strive to be honest and transparent in all my interactions with clients, vendors, employees, and family members.
