Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Beamon.
Kathryn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! I’m the owner of the Science Guys of San Diego! The Science Guys offer FUN, hands-on children’s science programs year-round, including summer camps, birthday parties, after-school clubs, in-school field trips & assemblies, and special event shows! We are a franchise of the parent company, Mr. Bond’s Science Guys, located in Nashville, TN. Currently, there is one other location, the Science Guys of Baltimore, with additional franchises opening in the future.
I was born in North Carolina but moved to Guatemala, Central America at the age of seven. I lived in Guatemala for eleven years, and my passion for teaching children started in middle school. After high school, I moved to Tennessee and earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education. Science courses were always my favorite in both high school and college! I worked in the public school systems in Chattanooga and Nashville, Tennessee for 11 years. I first met the Science Guys in 2014 and loved the way they made science fun, cool, and easy! I began working part-time for the Science Guys of Nashville in 2016 and have loved being a Mad Scientist ever since! In 2022, my husband and I moved to California and started the Science Guys of San Diego! I am fluent in Spanish and offer shows and parties in both languages!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The Science Guys of San Diego is just getting up and running! We have been open for less than two months, and most of that time has been spent working on business requirements, logistics, social media, marketing, and ordering and organizing all of our supplies and equipment at the “lab.” I have loved designing our website and playing with all of our new equipment, such as the Van de Graaff Generator (static electricity), mini rockets, and our cotton candy machine!
We have several clients booked for 2023 and are hopeful for more soon! The majority of our marketing is word-of-mouth. As we book more shows and programs, word will begin to spread. Children who have a blast studying Crazy Chemistry in our after-school clubs will go home, asking their parents to book a Spectacular Science Birthday Party! Students who enjoy learning all about space during our in-school field trips will go home, asking their parents to sign them up for a science summer camp. As more and more kids meet the Science Guys of San Diego, our bookings will increase!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am first and foremost an Educator! Once a teacher, always a teacher! I spent 11 years working in public education in Tennessee, first as an elementary school teacher and later as a Family Engagement Specialist. In my opinion, the best age to teach is 2nd grade, and my favorite subject to teach has always been science! As a Family Engagement Specialist, my role was to incorporate families and community partners into the school system. I was in charge of planning and implementing special events, workshops, and trainings for both students and families during the school day and after school. Every year, we always scheduled multiple programs with Mr. Bond’s Science Guys, and both students and parents alike LOVED them! Every summer, I worked for the Science Guys, teaching science summer camps, and we always had so much fun!
I am proud to be a small business owner! I never dreamed I would own my own business – I thought I would always work in public education. Teaching is my passion, and I now I get to teach my favorite subject, Science, every day! I am extremely organized, hard-working, and self-motivated. I’m hopeful these qualities will make the Science Guys of San Diego a success!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
As an educator, success is when a student “gets it!” Teaching is so rewarding, especially when you see the look on a child’s face when they finally understand a concept! During our Science shows, success is when we see kids engaged, learning, and having fun! Our motto is: “We make science fun, cool, and easy!” The Science Guys of San Diego is successful when children learn that science is fun, cool, and easy!
