Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Gilman.
Noah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My photography journey started 17 years ago in a middle school film photography class. I learned the basics of BnW film photography from a talented and knowledgeable local photographer. He taught me exposure triangles and how lighting affects how a photo looks and feels. A few years and a digital camera later I was chosen to go on a photographer-led expedition through China with National Geographic. It was a 3-week trip of a small group of students led by a handful of field photographers who taught us about photography and blessed us with a once in a lifetime adventure.
Fast forward to 2016 and after a complete large intestine removal due to Crohn’s disease, a traumatic brain injury from skateboarding resulting in my loss of smell and taste, and a wakeup call in a Los Angeles rehab for drugs and alcohol, I started my photography business shooting portraits/lifestyle/nature. I sold prints and captured headshots for folks in the San Diego area while obtaining a psychology degree from CSUSM.
I was blessed with a group of mentors who helped shaped my ideas around creating a solid business, mainly my mother and a local commercial real estate agent. My business grew into real estate, product, and wedding photography and later to shooting music videos and working with local corporations to produce advertising and marketing videos and commercials.
Today my main focus is portrait/family/wedding photography and creating compelling video/film for local business. My business is rooted in my knowledge of lighting and my ability to capture specific looks and fleeting moments.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing in life is easy. I was taught and learn daily that it takes an insane amount of work and dedication to live a fulfilled life and create a business. Life is a roller coaster sometimes; we just have to ride it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My knowledge of lighting stemming from my education in film photography is a shining beacon of light in our overly processed photo digital word. It gives me immense confidence in a variety of lighting situations, it allows me to create moods and capture meaning with my photos. I take pride in my unique and strong photo style.
I don’t follow trends and I don’t batch-edit my photos. I take my time and hand edit each photo to ensure a consistent quality and feel that I am happy with.
I take deep pride in my work and know that it is a reflection of who I am.
How do you define success?
Success to me is a personal fulfillment in getting to do and grow in what I love each day. Abstractly it would be freedom and a healthy happy family.
