Life & Work with Gerardo Meza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerardo Meza. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Gerardo Meza is a bicultural – bi-nationally surreal artist and muralist based in the Tijuana – San Diego Region. He is Chairman of the Border Public Arts Committee. Cofounder of the San Diego Art Society, and Program Director of San Diego Art Box He specializes in Creating visceral images extracted from his own Imaginarium, he stimulates the viewer to experience reality from a different paradigm.

The raw and free of academic regulations work of this eclectic Art has been exhibited in institutions such as The Museum of the Living Artist in CA to the walls of the Barrios and Bars in different cities.

Art has always been part of my life, at an early age I started drawing the images I saw in the clouds, and in the deepest parts of my subconscious. I started as a self-taught artist and then started my art Education at a local community college. As a young man, I wanted to share my peculiar way of processing reality… I found out that through my paintings I could share a piece of my story, struggles, and inspiration.

Sharing my art has taken me to very wonderful places.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Being an artist is like having a medical condition with no cure. You just experiment reality different and make sense of everything around you through color. The struggles for an artist are the same struggles anybody face when they are following their dreams. The rewards of being an artist and be able to transport people to other worlds is greater than the bumps you face on the road.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a surrealist artist and muralist, I spend a lot of time in my studio pouring my soul into a white canvas. I specialize in Surrealism, but I am known for the work I do with my community. Beautifying my city doing small interactive murals with the community whilst removing graffiti is what people know me for.

I’m proud that my art has taken me to different places like Egypt, Turkey, and the Mexican Republic.

I believe art has to be shared and made public. I believe that anyone that has the passion to express an idea or feeling trough art must be included and motivated to keep creating and transforming this world. Collaborating with established and emerging artists is what sets me apart from others.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
We take risks on a daily basis. Our decisions and paradigms shape our future. As an artist, you have to take the risk to be misunderstood, exposed, and economically unstable. But… you also experience reality with different eyes. You perceive beauty and ugliness from your own perspective.

The risks you take as an artist are no comparison to the satisfaction of having a continuous and profound contemplation of reality and being able to turn your feelings into works of art.
