Conversations with Amari Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amari Jones.

Hi Amari, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music for me started as early as I can remember. My father would play old school music of all kinds from earth, wind & fire, Bob Marley, La bamba, radio head to gospel. So, I can say that I’m thankful I grew up listening to different varieties or genres of music before I even knew I was going to be an art myself. Making music wasn’t my first love; I fell in love with drawing and sketching first; I used to write all over my homework assignments and get in trouble or made fun of a lot for it. I thought I would be a graphic designer or something like that, but once I graduated high school and moved to Florida I didn’t have any friends or care to make any really. I just worked and made music all summer of 2019 by this time, I’m 20 years old really just discovering something I thought was new to me but was really something I had always had a passion for just never tried to do it myself. I got lost in my work sometimes, staying up 2-3 days in a row with other artist and we really didn’t expect nothing out of it. I did it because I loved it, and it was genuinely fun, and once you do something you love for so long, it either becomes two things a curse or a purpose. For me, it was the latter. I believed in myself and my competitive nature so much I knew eventually, someone would take notice. Since 2019 I’ve done multiple shows and performances, one of which I opened up for Bay Area Artist “ Stunna Girl.” My drive even led me to land gigs such as walking the runway for LA fashion week one of the biggest fashion events in the world I got to even meet Prep Curry, the first black designer to get a deal with banana public and get some insight on what steps I should take when I start my own brand eventually. I guess the point I’m trying to prove is first you have to believe in yourself because without that then, you wouldn’t even be able to take that first step

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, the road wasn’t always smooth, and it still isn’t. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much time and resources that pour into trying to be an artist. I’ve been scammed before trying to get a show or some cover art, even for promotion. I took my fair share of loses on the road most by now give up, but I like the fact that it’s not easy I actually enjoy the journey and the unexpected turns because at the end of the road when you look back, it’ll be that much more sweeter

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an Artist, Producer, Engineer, Videographer, Director, Graphic designer, Fashion Designer, and model. I know it sounds crazy to say, but really, I do all these things, and I do them for a lot of other people as well. I first learned how to produce and record on an app called garage band that I had on my cracked iPhone 6 and a $10 microphone I ordered off Amazon. I would record in my car no a/c to get the songs done after a couple years of that, I was finally able to upgrade to a Mac book that my friend in the navy bought for us so technically, it wasn’t mine, but I was the one who picked up on how to operate the Logic Pro, and from there it was history like I said I already used to draw so when it came to needing cover arts I was gonna draw my one covers. The girls loved me at all my shows and the way I dressed, so I thought maybe I could be a model, so I went and got a gig at LA fashion week, and really it just happened like that.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My mother and father were the first ones to tell me as I was special, that I was a star I always felt like that growing up, even if I was quiet most of the time, I’ve never thought of myself as lesser than anyone even if I was the underdog
