Life & Work with Morell Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morell Brown.

Hi Morell, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the small town of Bellport; on the south shore of Long Island, New York. Although our community was small, we made sure that everyone was treated like family regardless of who they are. I remember my mom waking me up on Sundays for church (which I didn’t necessarily like), but I knew that I would be around some really good music.

Growing up, I knew I was different. I didn’t know what it was until I got to high school. I realized that I am a gay man. As an Afro-Latino who played soccer and tennis locally and regionally, I knew that some people may not agree with this, but frankly, I didn’t care. I wanted to be my authentic self and show the world who Morell Brown is.

After high school is when I really started to blossom. I started taking music more seriously and made connections everywhere I went. Because of this, I was able to be cast on Love and Hip Hop: NY, MTV’s TRL, and more! In addition, I was very hesitant about pursuing my music career due to being nervous about people supporting someone who is LGBTQ+. However, I decided that maybe I’m supposed to be that person to make a difference and utilize my platform to be a role model for people of all kind, including underrepresented LGBTQ+ and people of colour.

Fast forward to current day— I’ve amassed nearly 8,500 followers on Instagram, got over 2 million streams for my music on Spotify, was on the cover of ShoutOut SoCal, an SD-based magazine, became a partner in a new drink company local to San Diego, and also collaborated with Aussie Moisture.

All of this happened because a small-town boy from Long Island wanted to show the world who he was, and now he’s getting the chance to do so!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely was NOT a smooth road. I took a hiatus from singing twice because I thought, “Who would want to listen to me?” I’ve been told “no” so many times I’ve lost count. I remember auditioning for multiple shows and being told that I would never make it in the music industry, being an openly gay man, especially being Black and Latino. I felt like I was stuck with where I wanted to go with my music and with myself in general.

I will never forget the day I had a panic attack for a huge audition and BOMBED it, and I thought I could never get on stage again. I was so depressed. I have a family that looks up to me, and I want to make them proud. I think all of that stress definitely took its toll on me. I was able to compose myself at my next audition and did amazing! Although I wasn’t selected, I knew from that point that my friends, family, and fans don’t need to see me on TV because they can come to my live shows and watch me on stage, which is where I perform my best. Moral of the story is: You can take a hiatus as needed, or however long you’d like, but NEVER GIVE UP!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer/songwriter who loves to perform and have people join me along the way. I got my start with performing R&B but ended up transitioning into EDM music. It makes me feel so in tune with myself, and I couldn’t be happier. I’m known for my soulful voice, which instantly lights up the entire room. Not only have I made a difference with my music and charity work, but I’ve scored huge record label signings under Revealed Recordings and Aesthete Music, both of which are very well-known international EDM labels.

I’m most proud of myself for never giving up on my dreams. That determination allowed me to tour the USA, perform on TV shows, and gather over two million collective streams with only three songs: “Ready” ft. Cuebrick, “Alive” ft. Crowd, and “Alone Tonight” ft. Patrick Moreno, which helped catapulted me to where I am today!

What sets me apart from others is that I’m a down to Earth person who is not afraid to speak out against injustices. As an openly gay Afro-Latino, I think it’s important that I use my platform for good and help spread peace and love around the world. I also want to be a role model for children like me growing up; who didn’t have someone to look up to in the entertainment world.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would definitely have to be going fishing for the first time with mi abuelo Jose or Pop Pop as I call him. We made a fishing pole out of a tree branch and attached a fishing line to it. Just for some context, mi abuelo at this point had been fishing for longer than I’d been alive. He wasn’t able to catch anything that day, and I was afraid to touch the bait! Eventually, I went ahead and threw the line in the lake and just waited patiently… for about 5 minutes! I caught 3 large fish that day, and I was so excited, and so was Pop Pop! However, I could tell he was a bit jealous of that. All around, this was probably one of the best days of my life!
