Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Cellars.
Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My dream of becoming a dentist and owning a practice began during my early high school years in Canada. While I was born and raised there, I always wanted to establish roots in California. My professional journey began in undergrad, where I earned a degree in Biology alongside a degree in management and entrepreneurship. I was driven to own my own business sooner rather than later, as I wanted to attain as much business acumen as possible. Once I got into dental school, I called and interviewed as many successful dentists as I could. My goal was to gain valuable insight into what it takes to run a thriving dental practice while delivering top-notch results and care for my patients. I was told in many of those phone calls that I was too ambitious and that I needed to follow the normal path of working for someone for at least two years and then slowly take over the practice as a part of a succession plan. While I wouldn’t have minded taking that approach, the reasons that I was given as to why I needed to take that route didn’t seem like reasons that I couldn’t overcome. After two years of searching, preparation, and hard work, I discovered a retiring dentist who was a perfect fit and who cared deeply about his patients. It ended up being the perfect recipe of hard work, perseverance, and just enough luck to get it done. As expected, the first few months were challenging and filled with unexpected obstacles. However, I was fortunate to be able to keep the amazing staff that was employed under the previous doctor, and with all of their help, expertise, and many late nights, we were able to transition the practice without skipping a beat. I owe much of my success to my amazing staff and team who have been nothing short of exceptional.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As every entrepreneur knows, the entrepreneurial road is not a smooth one. Luckily, there weren’t any hiccups that myself and my team weren’t able to overcome. Finding the right lender initially was challenging, and transferring everything to the new business entity was complex while also being very time-consuming. The main parts of the business, though stayed very consistent – we didn’t have any staff turnover, and we retained nearly all of our patients. I think maintaining the core of our business made all of the struggles seem less worrisome, which made them easier to navigate.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jason Cellars DDS. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Our practice prides itself on providing the best dentistry and experience to our patients. We invest the time in doing all of the extra little things that make our patients’ dental work top-tier and use nothing but the best materials and equipment so that the treatment and outcomes are the best possible. One of our goals is to change the dental experience for patients. We don’t want people to fear coming to the dentist. Rather, we want them to be comfortable and feel taken care of as if they were part of our family. Through painless injections, noise-canceling headphones, blankets, pillows, and a complimentary coffee station, we go the extra mile as much as possible to deliver an outstanding experience. Our practice specializes in cosmetic dentistry, meaning veneers, braces, clear aligners, and implants, but we are also well known for our amazing hygienists who give the most thorough and professional cleanings in town. We also offer all forms of general dentistry for our patients of all ages and are sometimes sought out for our minimally invasive holistic approach, but our hygienist and our cosmetic smile enhancements are what we are most known for. In addition to our amazing team, what I am most proud of is our cosmetic enhancement results. We are able to create completely custom results for all our patients that brighten their smiles and accentuate their faces beautifully and naturally. We use the best master ceramist in Beverly Hills to be able to create veneers for our patients that look like natural teeth, giving them an amazing smile that it looks like they were born with.
How do you define success?
I think the definition of success is very personal and can and should vary between individuals. For me, success is being able to provide and care for those around me. In my practice, this means caring for all of my patients and my team. Outside of my practice, it means having the means to take care of my fiancé, future kids, and parents. In pursuit of achieving all of this, success to me also means creating the time to take care of myself while making sure that I enjoy the journey and don’t burn out along the way. While it is good to have inspirational people in your life, I think that it is important to define your success very personally and not strive to be your perception of someone else.
