Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaelin Transue.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been interested in art. From an early age, I always loved cartoons and illustrations. I would often doodle in class or on my homework. After high school, I began taking figure drawing courses at my community college and grew much more technically as an artist. Over the years, the artistic passion I always had continued to grow as it became a tool I used to help get through anxiety and depression. For a few years, I dove into my growing at my day job and neglected my love for art. After COVID and a few difficult life changes, I decided I needed to start getting back in touch with what makes me who I am, I have thrown myself back into my art full force and have been passionate about becoming more involved in the San Diego art community.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were many struggles along the way; I used to really struggle with social anxiety and a fear of being perceived as not good enough. Both socially and artistically. One of the first events I had gone to post-COVID was a figure drawing event where the other artists were extremely kind and supportive. It was an awesome first time putting myself out there. Since then, I have met more local creatives, and it has been nothing but rewarding. Recently I have made new friends in my life who have pushed me to grow artistically and personally in ways I had not been able to before. I am forever grateful for their love and support.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I focus mostly on figure drawing and abstract painting. But I have been trying out different mediums as I focus on my technical skills. My friends know me for my drawings mostly. I am most proud of my figure drawings and ability to capture the human form. I love attending figure-drawing sessions and just losing myself in the creative process. I think what sets me apart from other artists is my ability to evoke emotion from my artwork. Whether it be painting or drawing, I enjoy hearing others analyze my work and find their own meanings from my pieces.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is not a specific one, but what always stands out would be waking up early to watch the Madeline cartoons. If I remember correctly, it would be on around five in the morning. I loved cartoons as a child and was obsessed with Disney, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon cartoons. These shows were my first introductions to art, and I think always fueled that creative fire I have.
