Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Hibbits.
Hi Jen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had known about Coronado Witches Tea for a few years and finally attended with some girlfriends in 2018. Its scale blew me away, spirited participation, amazing costumes, and, quite simply, the fun we had! I wanted to create something similar in North County that also benefitted a local organization.
I wanted a portion of our proceeds to go to a local charity that makes a difference in the lives of women and families in our community. I chose the CRC because they make such a difference in our community. They serve more than 6400 people each year with emergency assistance, domestic violence emergency shelter, counseling, housing stability, and access to food.
So, in 2019, I organized, got a couple of local restaurants to agree, and we had about 30 participants come out for our first annual event.
We call it a a witchin’ fun pub crawl for a cause along Highway 101. I truly see it as a kick-off to the holiday season. It gets everyone in good cheer.
We skipped 2020 for obvious reasons, and last year we had 60 participants. Going into our fourth year, I’m hoping we have over 100 participants.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our second event in 2020 was a challenge because restaurants were understaffed and still trying to meet the demands of the public under COVID restrictions.
The only concern now is keeping the food and beverage costs low so that we can donate more money to the CRC each year.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In real life, I freelance digital marketing services and have started my own company, JBits Connects. My partner, Eric Guy, who has been incredibly supportive of Those Witches Be Crazy, works in marketing automation for Aya Healthcare, a nurse staffing organization.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe in taking risks wholeheartedly. In fact, I’ve been contemplating getting a tattoo that says, “Fortune favors the bold.” Throughout my life, I’ve come to appreciate the risks I’ve taken in various aspects, whether in my career, relationships, mundane choices, or speaking up. Embracing risks has brought me gratitude, as I prefer to avoid living with regrets and wasted time pondering “what ifs.” It’s through taking chances that we truly grow and discover new opportunities.
