Today we’d like to introduce you to Happy Hollows. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Happy Hollows is an indie rock band. The founding members of Happy Hollows are Sarah Negahdari (vocals/guitar), Charlie Mahoney (bass/synths), and Chris Hernandez (drums). Scott Munro joined as the band’s rhythm guitarist a few years after its formation. Sarah is originally from San Francisco, and Charlie and Chris are from Washington, D.C. Scott is from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Happy Hollows originally formed in Los Angeles. Charlie met Sarah at a strip mall one day shortly after he moved to L.A. For several years, Happy Hollows played its hometown shows in the Silver Lake and Echo Park neighborhoods of L.A. and toured around the U.S., Japan, Canada, and the U.K. Over the years, the Happy Hollows have played many shows in San Diego as well, including many gigs at the Casbah and the Soda Bar.
Prior to 2019, the band recorded three albums—Spells, Amethyst, and Concordia.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, the band’s members dispersed to many different locations. Charlie decided to move down to San Diego to be closer to his uncle, a longtime resident of Ocean Beach. Since then, the band has set up a recording studio in Ocean Beach and often practices and records in San Diego.
Happy Hollows released its latest album, CRAVER, in 2023.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been a lot of ups and downs over the years. We’ve been lucky enough to tour all over the world and to play at some of greatest venues in the U.S. We’ve also recorded at great studios and worked with amazing producers. But there have been many times when we’ve thought about throwing in the towel. At the end of the day, though, we really love writing, recording, and performing music. And there always seems like there is more creative territory for us to explore. That creative drive keeps us going and being active.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are an indie band. We’ve released four albums and played all over the U.S. and beyond. We’re happy to have been at this for a while, and we still feel very motivated to create new music. We definitely have our own sonic and visual aesthetic.
People always ask us what our secret is, and we always tell them: we like to drink coconut water and to go to bed early.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Charlie is a college professor, and Sarah does voice-over work for new age and self-help companies.
