Inspiring Conversations with Katie Smith of Terramar Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Smith.

Katie Smith

Hi Katie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I knew very early on that I wanted a career in design. I would often hide away in my room, moving furniture around for hours to create new layouts and then call my parents up to see the latest “grand reveal”! I thought this was what every kid did! After immersing myself in art programs throughout childhood, I went on to earn my BFA in Interior Design at Savannah College of Art and Design. When I graduated, I returned home to Boston for a few years while starting my career before deciding that I was ready for a new adventure (and a warmer climate!) Once I arrived in San Diego, I fell in love with the weather, the people, and the laid-back lifestyle. I’ve now lived here for 9 years and am proud to call it home!

For the first decade of my career, I worked at a large design firm, working primarily on hospitality projects like hotels and restaurants. I learned a lot about building and energy codes, construction, and developing my unique design perspective. Along the way, a few of my clients also asked me to help them design their homes. I felt honored to be invited into my clients’ lives, to understand their journey, and create a space that truly reflects their personal style. I quickly realized that designing homes was what I was truly passionate about and began filling my nights and weekends with residential work. I also started working part-time for a local residential designer and learned everything I could- not only about designing homes but also about running a successful business. Eventually, I felt fully equipped to take the leap into entrepreneurship and can now say that I have my absolute dream job.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d be lying if I said it isn’t scary to leave the comfort of a corporate job with benefits and a guaranteed salary, but I have been determined to succeed so that I can continue doing what I truly love. As the saying goes, “Nothing worth having comes easy.” I think the hardest part is just getting started- taking that leap of faith into self-employment, figuring out how to run a creative business, and landing that first project so you can build your portfolio of work. I’m so grateful to have had my friends and family cheering me on and helping me get my name out there since most of our work comes from referrals.

I also took a chance and started my company just before we decided to start our family, so I have learned a lot about time management as I navigate motherhood and my career. It was a lot of change at once, but I am so grateful to now have the flexibility to do what I love, and spend time with my son every day.

We’ve been impressed with Terramar Interiors, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Terramar Interiors is a full-service interior design firm. We specialize in residential projects ranging from renovation to new build for busy families and individuals who love fresh, modern, and layered interiors. We wholeheartedly believe that a thoughtfully designed space can enhance your day-to-day life and overall well-being. We also feel that your home should be your sanctuary, and really strive to create a sense of calm in our designs by drawing inspiration from nature.

By getting to know our clients early on in the design process, we are able to create thoughtful solutions to their wants and needs while also showcasing their personality through the design. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my clients’ faces light up when they see their new space or when we get a note months (or years) later from a client telling us how much they are still enjoying their completed home. I have developed lasting relationships with many of my clients, and it is such an honor to get repeat work or have our name referred to their friends and family.

We offer a variety of services, from concept design, to space planning, and furniture and finish selections. With every project, we will produce a detailed set of drawings containing everything your contractor will need to price the job, and build it out. We also love collaborating with architects and landscape designers to develop the exterior of the home so that it is a thoughtful and seamless transition as you enter the space.

If you’re interested in learning more, our website is a great place to start! We have examples of our work, more details about our services, and an inquiry page where you can get in touch to chat with us.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?

I feel incredibly fortunate to have had several mentors and advocates in my life. My parents always supported my decision to pursue a creative career and did everything they could to help me succeed. My husband has also been endlessly supportive of me starting my own business as we simultaneously navigated becoming new parents and tackling a home renovation of our own.

Before starting Terramar Interiors, I worked with another residential designer who was incredibly generous with her time and knowledge. There is so much to learn when you’re first starting a business, and I honestly don’t know that I would have had the courage to take the leap without her kindness and support. I’ve also had other local designers send potential clients my way if it seems like my aesthetic would be a better fit or they do not have capacity to take on more work. It’s just so cool to see designers supporting each other in that way rather than being competitive, and I’m really excited to be able to pay it forward as my business grows.
