Ellis California Jones, a San Diego native, embodies the spirit of resilience and community advocacy. His life story, marked by significant challenges and remarkable transformation, showcases his unwavering commitment to societal improvement and personal growth.
Raised in City Heights, Ellis faced early hardships. His family was uprooted by developers, leading to periods of homelessness, including living in a Ford Escort and later at the Days In hotel near a welfare office. Despite these struggles, Ellis demonstrated exceptional determination and talent, earning a full football scholarship to San Jose State University. This achievement not only highlights his athletic prowess but also his commitment to turning adversity into opportunity.
Now a candidate for District 3 Councilmember, Ellis California Jones aims to bring his rich background, blue-collar discipline, and deep community commitment to the forefront of local governance. His inspiring journey resonates with many and stands as a powerful testament to the impact of perseverance, dedication, and service to the community.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ellis’s journey took a consequential turn during his years of incarceration. Rather than being defeated by this experience, he transformed it into a period of personal growth and service. He dedicated himself to educating fellow inmates in computer literacy, aiding them with legal paperwork, and assisting them in earning their GEDs. These efforts deepened his understanding of systemic issues, including racial divides and cronyism, and ignited his passion for justice and reform.
Upon rejoining society, Ellis channeled his experiences into community service. He tackled pressing issues such as homelessness and easing regulatory burdens on small businesses, driven by his belief in second chances and the potential for growth.
His unique life journey led him to the political arena as a member of the San Diego Republican Party. Here, his diverse experiences and deep understanding of community needs have become invaluable, driving his advocacy for the well-being of his fellow citizens.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My campaign, “ELLIS CALIFORNIA JONES FOR CITY COUNCIL 2024,” is a challenge to the incumbent Stephen Whitburn, bringing a moderate Republican viewpoint to a predominantly Democrat district.
Representing District 3, which encompasses diverse neighborhoods like Balboa Park, Banker’s Hill, Downtown, Golden Hill, Hillcrest, Little Italy, Middletown, Mission Hills, North Park, and South Park, I am committed to understanding and addressing the unique needs of each community. My professional background as an inspector and experience in business consulting provide me with a unique perspective on local issues.
My campaign is built on a foundation of pragmatic and innovative solutions to the challenges facing our district. From fostering economic development to improving community services, my focus is on promoting inclusive and sustainable growth for all residents. I believe in a future where every voice in District 3 is not just heard but also valued and respected.
As a candidate, I am not just running for a position; I am advocating for a future that embraces the spirit and diversity of San Diego. I am committed to bringing balanced, thoughtful leadership to the City Council, representing the best interests of all constituents in our vibrant community.

The most vital qualities to my success are transparency, tolerance, and accountability. Transparency fosters trust and openness, tolerance encourages understanding and inclusivity, and accountability ensures integrity and responsibility in all my actions.
