Conversations with Lorén Patrick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorén Patrick.

Lorén Patrick Stade Murillo

Hi Lorén, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Coronado, CA. I started DJing in my childhood bedroom with an obsessive passion for juggling records and utilizing “turntablism” for scratch routines. I started spinning vinyl in the early 2000s and publicly in Chicago, IL, in the latter half of 2005. I have performed in San Diego, Los Angeles, Chicago and Mexico. Everything from clubs in the Gaslamp District to private events for Sony, Target, Michael Kors, and Stance. I have had the pleasure of working with Sleeping Giant Music Agency, M-Theory Records, Access Hip Hop, and Vinyl Junkies here in San Diego. My experience leaves me well-versed in the foundations and culture of independent hip-hop, along with modern styles and the roots of a wide array of electronic genres.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sharing your love through music by blending genres and eras together is a great way to express yourself and take the crowd on a journey through whatever you want to make of it. Sometimes you succeed, and a lot of times you don’t. It’s hard to please everyone all the time in life, and very hard to do so with a large group of people you don’t know and don’t know you. DJing gives me the opportunity to read the audience and master ways to mix music together in a way that will catch someone’s attention, even if it’s not specifically the music they prefer. It is an art form and kinda reminds me of expanding on something you know a lot about around a crowd of people that aren’t particularly educated in different music forms and knowledge of. Very few question it, and many might just believe you are a savant of your own realm.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently I am working independently with Sound by the Sea, located in Oceanside, off Pacific Coast Highway. I am a resident sound selector for their listen lounge (Restaurant and Bar) and share rare records from my collection on a weekly basis. I look at my job as taking strangers on a seamless adventure through sound. I am still in contact with M-Theory Music (Mission Hills) as I used to assist their owner with buying and selling specific genres of vinyl. I also am working with Vinyl Junkies on establishing future dates to spin at their location in South Park. Performing in various types of environments in the past couple decades has given me the experience/knowledge to excel in the industry. Having been taught how to DJ using physical records and distinguishing or counting beats per minute by ear gives me the upper hand above the rest. I have gained a certain wisdom of music per se, which helps me catch all types of audiences and crowds. Growing event to event along the way on an exciting voyage through the history of music and production.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
San Diego is extremely eclectic and diverse. I grew up skateboarding all around this city and know my way around by “landmarks and neighborhoods”,” not street names. The city is growing immensely and provides many opportunities for up-and-coming artists and opens the door for creativity that may not usually be the norm.. It’s wide variety of culture allows you to learn about and find your true self along the way.
