Inspiring Conversations with Jami Shapiro of Silver Linings Transitions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jami Shapiro. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Jami Shapiro

Believing everything happens for a reason, Jami discovered the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers (NASMM) in 2014 when they were holding the national conference in San Diego. Jami went into real estate after leaving a career as a department store buyer to be able to remain home when she had her first child. A cancer diagnosis at age 34 caused her to examine her life’s purpose and determine she wanted to do more fulfilling work that would make an impact on others.

The name of her company, “Silver Linings Transitions,” is about helping find a bright spot during tough times.

Jami sees Silver Linings Transitions and her role as company founder as professional and compassionate guides for clients when they are faced with transitions due to moving, downsizing, or home organizing, which often require tough decisions about what to do with a lifetime of belongings.

Silver Linings Transitions is a bright spot for anyone facing a move and is a resource for adult children helping their parents.

As someone’s who’s faced cancer and divorce, Jami understands personally how important it is to find the “silver lining” when life doesn’t go the way we’d hoped. Jami is a certified Senior Move Manager, and Silver Linings Transitions is a member of the Better Business Bureau and Diamond Society member of the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers (NASMM), a NAPO (National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals) member and a member of the ICD (Institute for Chronic Disorganization) as well as a Certified Divorce Coach.

After going through her divorce, Jami also saw personally how difficult it is for women re-entering the workforce after taking time off to raise children. Silver Linings Transitions helps women transitioning back into the workforce gain leadership skills, work a flexible schedule, and do fulfilling work.

The company is celebrating their ninth anniversary in January and has recently become a San Diego chapter of Safe Moves for Seniors, a national nonprofit dedicated to reducing the stress and financial burden of moving for low-income seniors.

Silver Linings Transitions’ tagline, “Making Moves Magical,” is about turning a stressful experience into a transformative one.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not a smooth road. Shortly after launching the business and before getting it off the ground with a partner, the partner exited the business and Jami’s 15-year marriage ended. Jami’s children were 5, 10, and 12, and her family relocated from Florida to California only three years earlier, which left her with little support. Thankfully, Jami had a close relationship with her former mother-in-law (who she affectionately refers to as her mother-in-law), who relocated to California to help with the kids. Because Jami was facing divorce, she had no co-signer on the business and had to “bootstrap” funding the business. She ran up credit cards, borrowed money from her daughter’s bat mitzvah account, and borrowed $5,000 from her mother-in-law on a handshake.

Also, Jami had no business experience and had to learn about starting a business as she was doing it. She make a lot of. Mistakes on the way but is grateful to have found the right people at the right time to help. She also relied on the SBA, Score, Hera Hub, and EOA.
