Today we’d like to introduce you to Anel Muro.
Hi Anel, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I always enjoyed photography when I was younger and one day, I decided to pursue it as a career. I quit my job, went back to school, and started exposing myself as a photographer. I worked on a lot of film sets – for free, of course. I knew that I wanted to start photographing weddings, but I had zero idea how I would even start or how I would book a couple or more importantly, if I would even like it. A friend of mine who is also in the wedding industry was nice enough to allow me to shadow him on a wedding gig he had. I realized on that day that I wanted to work as a wedding photographer as well as a BTS photographer (behind the scenes during film sets). So, I started slowly booking brides, and then I found this wedding company called Storytellers Global. I started working for them for the last almost 5 years, and I actually just bought that company this year with my partner Andrew Koltuniuk!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think any type of career is ever smooth. They always come with obstacles and challenges, but I think the secret to getting through all of those is to enjoy what you do. It also helps to surround yourself with people who are working hard in their careers because it keeps you motivated and, in a way, you know that you’re not alone. It also helps to talk to people who are in the same industry as you because they really understand what you’re going through and can even give you tips on how to get over the obstacles and avoid future ones.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is basically all over the place haha! But I focus more on Weddings! I personally love weddings, so it’s always exciting when I get to photograph one. Planning a wedding is already stressful enough, and having to wait on replies from vendors can sometimes add to those anxiety nerves, so I always try to reply to the brides as quickly as I can. I offer to sit when them either physically or virtually to talk about their questions or concerns, as well as offering to help plan their itinerary! I always make myself available during the planning process so I can make it as easy as possible. I offer the bride and groom to look at a sample gallery so they can get an idea of what they would be receiving, and it also helps them figure out which package would be best for their special day! Getting to know each other before the wedding day also helps with not having them be so nervous, and it allows for more natural-looking smiles and poses! I’m also fluent in Spanish so it has helped me communicate not necessarily with the bride and groom but with the immediate family, so it makes them feel comfortable when they want to request pictures!
