Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha K. Regalado – Cervantes.
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story began almost 12 years ago. An idea and a “just for now, while I finish school” mentality. I was in the process of obtaining my bachelor’s degree at CSUEB online when the idea of making cakes while I was in school began, and like they say – the rest is history.
The journey to be where I am today has been the longest and craziest roller coaster of my life – I’ve had to adapt and change to mold into what the clients want – which changes every so often to fit in with the new “trends.” Trying to make everyone happy isn’t easy, but finding a middle ground where I don’t sacrifice my own thoughts and ideas is what has allowed me to stay in business for almost 12 years – even through a pandemic, egg shortage, and price increases in 90% of what is needed to bake.
I started in my home kitchen as a 24-year-old girl with an idea and a dream – since then I’ve grown into a brand that (almost) 36-year-old woman is extremely proud of. This business has allowed me to stay alive, it has gotten me through the worse of my depression, it has forced me out of bed, it has shaped and molded me into who I am, and even when things haven’t been easy, I wouldn’t change a single thing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Far from it – the biggest challenges were learning my worth. As a small business owner, we often doubt ourselves and our worth. It’s not just a cake or just a cookie – something that is custom-made, fresh from scratch just for YOU, is always going to cost more. Learning that has been a 12-year struggle, but I have to remind myself that I am worth it.
As with any other kind of business, you will always encounter a variety of struggles and challenges, but if you truly love what you are doing – keep going. This, too, shall pass.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
We are an online bakery located in National City.
We specialize in Mexican candy flavors that transport you to your childhood favorites. Our homemade fresh from scratch-baked goods are made with quality ingredients and only made to order, ensuring quality and freshness every time.
Our fresh from scratch fillings are definitely one of the things that sets us apart, we use fresh fruit only in our 12-hour cooked jams. Our frosting is also one of a kind, not too sweet, but just the perfect balance of flavor and sweetness.
I am proud of just being here – 12 years later – sharing my story with others. I was the rebel teenager mad at the world, and now I am someone others look up to. I have become the person I would look up to as a kid. My brand has allowed me to see other businesses grow and work alongside with. I have made friends that I know consider family with this brand.
We are 100% an online business that sells at various markets throughout San Diego – we update our social media constantly of where you can find us. For the South Bay locals, we also have our daily menu available for local pick-up. Custom orders for cakes, cupcakes and more, but we do recommend booking early, during peak season we book 8-10 weeks in advance.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If you have a business, risk-taking is part of the journey. You can’t grow your business without risks. The biggest risk you are taking is the moment you decide to open your own business – it’s no easy thing to do.
I’ve taken one too many risks with my brand, I’ve lost all my savings, and I’ve questioned when the next order would come in, but even when I’ve had doubts and fears over my risk-taking, I regret nothing.
