Today we’d like to introduce you to Ekaterina Ilina.
Hi Ekaterina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Ekaterina Ilina, also known as DJ Katrina Essence. I was born in Lithuania and grew up in Russia. Before stepping into the world of music, I made a mark as a professional dancer, specializing in the unique style of Krump. A pioneer in my country, I not only embraced this dance form but also became a two-time world champion. My passion for Krump led me to travel to over 17 countries, where I not only taught the art but also organized international events. I moved to South California about 8 years ago to dance for the best krump team in the world, “Street Kingdom.” I was ready for a new chapter in my life and transitioning to my DJ career. In 2017, I graduated from “Scratch DJ Academy,” created by Jam Master Jay, and started working as a DJ and building my business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up in another country, I had a very different upbringing than other local DJs. I had to very quickly adjust to a new environment and also embrace the rich tapestry of American demographics and music. At the beginning of my career, it was very challenging to be a female DJ in a male-dominated industry, but now I’m witnessing a positive shift with the gradual fading away of old stereotypes.
Another big challenge was living in California without a driver’s license, at the beginning of my career I had to catch Uber with all my DJ equipment. Being far from my family without a support system and building connections from the ground up.
One of the challenges for me is to pivot from unhealthy environments and find residencies and events that fit my lifestyle.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a multi-genre DJ, I find myself in different settings and different environments, anywhere from bars and clubs to sophisticated luxury events, and I take pride in my ability to deliver and create unforgettable experiences anywhere I DJ. My background as a professional dancer gives me an advantage to always rock the dance floor. I really love what I do, and it reflects in my performance and resonates with my audience.
As someone who supports a healthy lifestyle, I love working with fitness/wellness events as well as collaborating with Arts and Fashion. I provided sound for exhibitions of artists like “WhIsBe” and Joelle Blouin, as well as fashion shows for major retailers such as Macy’s and Nordstrom. I organized many events bridging the gap between local businesses, art, and community. I also love to create an atmosphere for restaurants and rooftop lounges to enhance customer experience.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
– Take courses or classes! It will save you so much time than figuring out on your own.
– Record yourself! Social Media presence is very helpful.
– Experience is everything! You really become a good DJ and find your sound after 5-7 years, so be patient.
– Believe in yourself and be your own best friend. Watch the way you talk to yourself in your head. Mindset is everything.
– Be open to new music and genres that are outside of your comfort zone and liking. Follow and meet people who expose you to different music. Be musically Open Minded.
